Kpop fans might think it takes too long before their favorite trainee (if it has been announced) to debut. However, some fans understand enough to wait patiently. Indeed, it takes years of struggling and determination to become a successful idol. Here are the things a trainee MUST go through before they could debut as a Kpop idol.
A Kpop Trainee MUST Go Through These Things
1. Pre-audition training
If you have a dream to be a Kpop idol, you’d better start training from an early age. There are things you have to prepare in advance, like your vocal and dancing skills. A Kpop trainee spends years practicing and studying at academies, training classes, and home to achieve the dream.
2. Audition
Once you are confident enough, it is time to look for auditions. Look out for several auditions, send out the application and prepare the materials for each audition thoroughly. It is not rare for a trainee-to-be to join 30+ auditions. Knowing some tips for a successful audition will benefit you.
3. Learn Korean (if non-Korean) or public speaking
Another challenge for a non-Korean trainee is to master the Korean language in one or two years at most. The faster, the better, though. If a trainee is a native Korean or has mastered the Korean language, they must learn public speaking. Thus, they won’t get embarrassed when talking to journalists or fans.
4. Contracts
Upon passing an audition, a trainee will have a 2 to 4 years contract with the company. However, it is only a contract to accept them into the company. There is no guarantee of a debut yet.
5. Intense Training
After a trainee signs the contract, they should follow the rules and schedules of the company. Most of the time of a Kpop trainee will be spent on training: dancing, singing, rapping, acting, and more. A trainee should compete with other trainees at this stage, and only a tiny percentage will pass.
6. Training vs. School
If a trainee is still of school age, they have to juggle between school and training. It is possible for a trainee to choose training over the school. It is not few to find Kpop idols who were dropping out of school. However, it is not advisable if you are still a new trainee.
7. Extra Homework
Juggling between school and training, a trainee must have a lot to do. Homework from school is sometimes frustrating, plus tasks from the trainer. To debut as a Kpop idol in the future, a trainee should learn how to solve a Math problem, as well as memorize the new dance movements at the same time. It’s indeed extra work for a trainee!
8. Strict Diet
Not only training, but a trainee who wants to be a Kpop idol must also go through a strict diet according to the company. To be able to debut as a Kpop idol, a trainee is usually forced to meet Korean beauty standards. They should seriously pay attention to what goes inside their mouth. Not only that, a trainee have to do routine exercises as well.
9. Low chances
Although a trainee has gone through hard years, only about 10% of them make a successful debut. With the similar training pressure, only a few can debut as a Kpop idol. The others are not skilled enough or not lucky enough to make the cut.
10. Debut
Debut seems to be the ultimate goal of a trainee after years of hard preparation. However, it is just the beginning of another competition. There are Kpop idols who are soaring up high, but not a few are fading away just right after the debut.
So, after a trainee goes through the hard years, even if they successfully debut, the journey is still long ahead.
