Actor Lee Jung-jae made history as one of the 2022 Hawaii Film Critics Society Awards (HFCS) winners. However, this time is not for his acting but for his directing debut. The actor took home the Best New Filmmaker at the 2022 Hawaii Film Critics Society Award with his directorial debut Hunt. Earlier, two famous South Korean directors won the award. They are director Park Chan-wook for The Handmaiden and director Bong Joon-ho for Parasite.

The actor-director of Hunt, Lee Jung-jae, competed against four other directors. They were Scottish director Charlotte Wells for her film Aftersun, American director Elegance Bratton for his movie The Inspection, American director John Patton Ford for his film Emily, the Criminal, and finally, Spanish director Carlota Martinez-Pereda for her film Piggy.

Hunt is an action-thriller political drama set in the turbulent eighties. The story follows two South Korean agents, Park Pyong-ho (Lee Jung-jae) and Lee Jung-do (Jung Woo-sung), who are suspicious of one another.

Both have the same mission to find North Korean spies inside the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA). The spies have leaked highly classified information that could threaten national security. And later, the two agents discover a shocking plot, “Korea’s No. 1 Assassination Operation.”

Lee Jung-jae’s first directorial movie Hunt had its world premiere at Cannes Film Festival in 2022. It gained massive success with more than 4 million tickets sold and favorable reviews.

With his first directorial film, Lee has received multiple awards as a new director, including the 2022 Blue Dragon Film Awards,  2022 Buil Film Awards, 2022 Korean Association of Film Critics Awards, and CJ ENM 2023 Visionary.

On the other hand, for his achievements as an actor at the 27th Critics Choice Awards and the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, Lee Jung Jae has received the Geungwan Order of Cultural Merit. In addition, the actor also received the Korea Image Stepping Stone Award from the Corea Image Communication Institute.
