MBC’s latest historical drama starring Woo Do Hwan, Joseon Attorney: A Morality had received massive criticisms for attacking SBS Taxi Driver 2 and using them for a publicity stunt. So, what did MBC do this time? Check out the following complete report for what happened to Joseon Attorney Korean drama.
JOSEON ATTORNEY Korean Drama Starring Woo Do Hwan Allegedly Mocking TAXI DRIVER 2
Korean broadcasting company, MBC, has once again created a massive commotion and scandal after attacking a competitor’s project with the same broadcasting time.
Ten Asia reported a few days ago that MBC drama posted a promotional post on their official social media accounts. The post was supposed to elevate the excitement for MBC’s ongoing Korean drama, Joseon Attorney: A Morality (previously Joseon Lawyer). But instead of raising fans’ anticipation, it caused a massive controversy due to its inappropriate content.
What Happened?
According to the report, instead of promoting its own strength, MBC posted inappropriate captions for Joseon Attorney Korean drama, attacking its competitor’s ongoing project, SBS Taxi Driver 2.
On March 29, MBC revealed a promotional poster for Joseon Attorney: A Morality Korean drama on its social media accounts. The poster portrayed Joseon Attorney main cast, Woo Do Hwan, with a controversial caption:
“Take a taxi ride for illegal revenge?
Joseon Attorney: A Morality.
We seek revenge legally!”
This specific caption triggered negative responses and criticisms from the general public. That is because such word selections clearly portrayed MBC’s intention of attacking its competitor’s project with the same broadcast time as Joseon Attorney Korean drama: Taxi Driver 2 by SBS.
Taxi Driver 2 tells the story of a private taxi company, Rainbow Taxi, that seeks revenge for the victims of injustice. The story started with its main character Kim Do Gi’s revenge against the serial killer who had killed his mother, then developed into solving cases for other victims, which the law had failed to protect.
This basic storyline is similar to the webtoon-adapted Korean drama, Joseon Attorney, starring Woo Do Hwan. The main character Kang Han Soo is also seeking revenge on the person responsible for his parent’s death. But different from Kim Do Gi, Kang Han Soo chose to become a lawyer instead. He would then seek revenge for his parents and help other victims through trials by law.
JOSEON ATTORNEY Korean Drama Received Criticism for Attacking TAXI DRIVER 2
The similarity between the characters’ background and basic storyline made it very clear that MBC’s caption for Joseon Attorney was meant to attack Taxi Driver 2.
Therefore, fans criticized the use of such a caption in the poster. They questioned whether it was necessary to mention ‘illegal taxi ride’, knowing the two dramas have completely different settings. Instead of raising anticipations for Joseon Attorney, the caption only resulted in resentment towards the Korean drama.
The public believed that bashing Taxi Driver 2 for publicity stunts is very inappropriate, causing fans’ reluctance to watch Joseon Attorney instead.
NOT The First Time!
What’s most important is that this is not the first time MBC doing negative publicity stunts and mockery. Previously, MBC created a massive scandal involving Kpop legends BTS in its hit project, Tomorrow.
Not only that but the broadcasting company even put inappropriate images, captions, and mockery against various nations during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics broadcast. Even their president and CEO Park Sung Je must bow down and apologize in public for such a grave mistake.
These frequent errors and repeated failures made the public wonder whether MBC still deserves to stand as one of South Korea’s largest broadcasting companies with such quality.
At the same time, another perspective from the report mentioned that such a publicity stunt gives Joseon Attorney Korean drama more opportunity to stand out even before its release date. Fans are wondering whether such sniping humor can help Joseon Attorney to compete against Taxi Driver 2, knowing that the taxi company had recorded a skyrocketing rating of 17.7%.
