The controversial piece surfaced on December 27 last year, coinciding with the day of Lee Sun Kyun’s death. The report suggested that Lee Sun Kyun had left a note expressing apologies over substantial penalties for his film and advertisement commitments.

Dispatch asserted that the details of the supposed letter had diverged from the truth. In particular, they refuted the article’s claim regarding 10 billion won in penalty fees.

Subsequently, TV Chosun removed the contentious article about Lee Sun Kyun’s letter from their platform eight days after its initial publication.
Apology Overdue: Agency of “Parasite” Actor Lee Sun Kyun Already Taking Legal Actions
Previously, HODU&U Entertainment, the agency representing “Parasite” actor Lee Sun Kyun, issued a legal stance following his death. Korean media believed the agency’s legal stance was likely aimed at TV Chosun.
“We have recently noticed the spread of false rumors and misinformation about our actors. Therefore, we have started collecting relevant materials and data while simultaneously taking legal action.
In the future, we will firmly deal with any situation involving the spread of false facts.
We initially trusted that a thorough and fair police investigation would uncover the truth. However, given the current circumstances, we no longer feel confident about its outcomes. As a result, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to clarify and correct the information piece by piece.
Thus, on January 2, Hodu&U Entertainment filed a complaint against a reporter who reported false content as truth on December 27, 2023. We ask that the reporter sincerely apologize and actively participate in the ensuing legal proceedings.
Additionally, since the investigation was ongoing and has not yet concluded, it was inevitably impossible for us to respond to all inquiries.
Therefore, we ask for the modification and deletion of all articles and online posts published without certain sources or fact-checking. We kindly urge you to take swift action on this matter.”

Following this, TV Chosun removed the related report and video on January 4. Attempts to access any related articles on TV Chosun’s website will now lead to an unavailable page.
It was Against the Government’s Rules
In light of Lee Sun Kyun’s letter removal, apparently, the South Korean government does not allow any publicity related to someone’s farewell message.
In line with the ‘Suicide Reporting Guidelines 3.0’ established by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Central Suicide Prevention Center, and the Korean Journalists Association, the media is advised against detailing the contents of farewell letters.
These guidelines stress the need to respect the privacy of the deceased and their families and to prevent glorifying suicide by minimizing reports on farewell letters.
