BTS Suga Booked for DUI Case for Drunk Driving a Scooter During Military Enlistment

Today is supposed to be a happy day for BTS rapper-producer Suga and his fans, who are currently celebrating the first anniversary of his solo concert. However, a shocking incident happened instead, replacing all the celebratory hype with heavy criticism.

Apparently, BTS Suga has been booked for a DUI case after he drove a scooter while he was drunk.

On August 7, the Yongsan Police Station in Seoul announced that they had booked BTS Suga on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving).

They were currently investigating the case, but according to the reports, BTS Suga had been riding an electric scooter in a drunken state in the Yongsan district on August 6. A while later, he suddenly fell by himself on the street.

Nearby police officers immediately came to help him. But then, these officers noticed the smell of alcohol coming from BTS Suga. They became worried that BTS Suga might have been drunk. Therefore, they handed him over to the local police station.

Officially Booked with His License Revoked for Drunk Driving a Scooter?

In South Korea, the electric scooter BTS Suga uses is the same as an electric kickboard. Also known as an e-scooter, this vehicle has gained massive popularity in the country, particularly in urban areas. Due to their convenience and eco-friendliness, most South Koreans usually ride these scooters for short-distance travel.

However, it doesn’t mean that you can just ride them freely.

South Korean government has, in fact, applied strict regulations for electric scooter use. The riders must be at least 16 years old and possess a valid driver’s license or a motorized bicycle license. Not only that, but all the riders must wear helmets to maintain their safety. Even when you don’t personally own the scooter, scooter rentals must also abide by these regulations before renting their scooters.

Since there have been severe death cases due to the danger of electric scooter usage, those who violate the rules must face a severe fine and various other sanctions.

What’s more concerning is that BTS Suga had apparently ridden the scooter while he had been severely drunk.

According to several reports, the result of his breathalyzer test had exceeded the 0.08% limit. Therefore, BTS Suga can no longer ride a motorized scooter or bike. That is because his driving license has now officially been revoked.

Official Apology from BIGHIT and BTS Suga for the DUI Drunk Driving Case

Responding to the severe DUI drunk driving case while on military duty, both BTS Suga and BIGHIT eventually issued an official apology.

BIGHIT Official Statement

“Hello.

This is BigHit Music.

We apologize for the incident involving BTS member Suga’s electric scooter accident.

On the night of the 6th (Tuesday), Suga was on his way home while under the influence of alcohol, riding an electric scooter with a helmet on. After traveling approximately 500 meters, he fell while parking the scooter. The police officers nearby conducted a breathalyzer test, resulting in a fine and a license revocation. Fortunately, no injuries or property damage occurred due to the incident, and he returned home under police guidance.

We apologize for the disappointment caused by the artist’s inappropriate behavior. As a social service agent, he will accept any disciplinary actions from his workplace for causing public concern.

We will take greater care to ensure that such incidents do not happen in the future.

Thank you.”

BTS Suga’s Official Statement

“Hello, this is Suga.

I am very sorry and ashamed to come to you with disappointing news.

Last night, after drinking at a dinner gathering, I rode an electric scooter to return home. I thought it was safe because it was a short distance, and I failed to recognize that using an electric scooter under the influence is prohibited, thereby violating the Road Traffic Act.

I fell while parking the electric scooter in front of my house, and a nearby police officer conducted a breathalyzer test, which resulted in my license revoked and a fine imposed.

Thankfully, no one was injured, and no property was damaged during this incident, but I sincerely apologize to everyone for my irresponsible behavior.

I deeply regret my careless and wrong actions, and I apologize to everyone who may have been hurt or disappointed. I will take greater care to ensure that such incidents do not happen again in the future.

Thank you.”

Criticisms and Backlash on Suga’s DUI Case During Military Enlistment

Finally, since South Korea considers an electric scooter as another vehicle they must be aware of, BTS Suga is now facing severe criticism from the Korean public.

  • “There’s a lot of chatter about electric scooters causing accidents on their own, but I can’t believe he was riding one while drunk. At least there was no major accident.”
  • “If you ride a scooter drunk, doesn’t that mean your license should be revoked? I know someone who lost their license for the same reason. LOL.”
  • “They should definitely revoke his license for that. He should have controlled his drinking.”
  • “It’s pretty ironic that he wrote lyrics about the military but ended up doing public service instead. And now, he was found to have fallen over by himself. HAHAHA, his ability to embarrass himself is unmatched.”
  • “His morals are really disappointing.”
  • “His apology just makes it worse.”
  • “Even his apology is terrible.”
  • “I hate how his and HYBE’s apology keeps emphasizing that no one was harmed. Just because no one got hurt, does that make it okay to drive drunk?”
  • “I hope he takes this seriously. Two people I know had their licenses revoked for driving a scooter drunk. You need a license for these things, but how are middle school kids driving them? We should just get rid of electric scooters altogether.”
  • “There are idols who lost their licenses and didn’t hit anyone either, but they didn’t just get away with an apology.”
  • “No one got hurt, but still…”
  • “Why is he even mentioning that no one was harmed? It’s totally unnecessary.”
