MBC Files Legal Dispute Against “Jeongnyeon” Production Team
MBC and the production company behind the new Korean drama starring Kim Tae Ri, “Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born,” have reportedly started a massive legal controversy.
On September 12, MBC released an official statement, announcing that it had filed for damages against the production company of “Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born” Korean drama. The company had filed a legal complaint, requesting damages and asking the court to freeze the production company’s assets. And apparently, the Seoul Central District Court has approved this request.
“We asked the court to temporarily freeze the production company’s assets because we believe they used our work unfairly and broke off contract talks. The court agreed to our request.”

Apparently, this has become a massive issue in the Korean drama industry. MBC claimed to have suffered damages due to a change in scheduling. And yet the production company counters, blaming MBC for delaying decisions on important issues like production costs and scheduling.
Therefore, MBC filed a legal complaint against 3 companies involved in Kim Tae Ri new drama, “Jeongnyeon”: Studio N (a subsidiary of Naver Webtoon), Management mmm (Kim Tae Ri’s agency), and NPO Entertainment (Shin Ye Eun’s agency).

According to Dispatch’s report, Kim Tae Ri new drama, “Jeongnyeon,” started its journey in 2020 when Studio N and Management mmm acquired the rights. The team cast Kim Tae Ri as the lead for the new drama and approached Jung Ji In PD from MBC in August 2022 to lead the project.
Then, in November 2022, the production team proposed a deal for MBC to broadcast the drama, with filming set to begin in September 2023.
However, disagreements over production costs arose, and MBC delayed responding for six months. When MBC finally offered a budget in May 2023, it was too low, but the production company continued negotiations, trusting MBC and turning down other offers.
“We clearly informed MBC in advance that we had set the filming schedule for ‘Jeongnyeon’. We also repeatedly asked for a response so that we would not lose the opportunity to explore other platforms.”

MBC Challenged “Jeongnyeon” Team to Find Other Platforms
A month before filming, MBC asked for staff changes to cut costs, which broke the production company’s trust. The production company could not delay filming any longer. They then informed MBC that they would seek out other platforms, and MBC responded, “Do it if you can.”
Eventually, the production company turned to Studio Dragon, a company under CJ ENM, which accepted all their proposals. This led to Kim Tae Ri new Korean drama, “Jeongnyeon,” being scheduled to air on tvN instead of MBC.

Only 20 days before filming, MBC told us to go to another channel if we could. We had to endure a delay of over a month to move to another platform.”

MBC claims they lost significant resources due to this switch and filed a legal complaint, which led to a court-approved freeze of the production company’s assets. The court agreed to MBC’s request for a provisional asset freeze, but the production company argued that it was a temporary decision and not the final ruling.
Still, despite all that’s happened in the legal battle, “Jeongnyeon” new Korean drama starring Kim Tae Ri is set to premiere on tvN on October 12.
