Have you been going back and forth between Korean and American shows? Then you must have been familiar with the US series “Modern Family.” Recently, a new Korean drama has been facing massive backlash and controversy for claiming to be the official remake of “Modern Family.” Fans are rallying on online communities and social media to “leave the series alone.” But what really happened exactly? Join us in a complete discussion on this controversial remake below.
New Korean Drama Faces Massive Controversy for Claiming to be “Modern Family” Remake
KBS’s new Korean drama, “Villain’s Country,” starring “The Judge from Hell” actress Oh Na Ra and veteran actor Park Young Gyu, has been facing massive controversy among local and international TV audiences.
On October 19, a post on the Korean online community TheQoo raised a topic on the latest Korean drama starring Oh Na Ra, “Villain’s Country.” This post highlighted several comments on X (formerly Twitter), questioning how it was possible that the Korean drama claimed to be a remake of the American series “Modern Family” while the storyline doesn’t even touch any of the US series’ factors, even the slightest.
For the record, “Modern Family” is a 10-season American sitcom depicting the hilarious and heartwarming stories of an extended family.
The sitcom takes in a mockumentary format with the perfect blend of classic humor within the characters’ daily interactions. But at the same time, every episode highlights various crucial moments and relationship values within the family.
And yet, the reported KBS remake of “Modern Family” is apparently not even close to the primary concept and storyline.
Criticisms and Backlash for Completely Different Storyline.
In its latest release last month, “Villain’s Country,” a Korean drama starring Oh Na Ra, reported a conflicting storyline. According to the report, this new alleged “Modern Family” remake will be a family-oriented comedy-drama depicting a chaotic world of Korean sisters with their husbands and children.
Also, the main character (Oh Na Ra) is portrayed as a former flight attendant with a long history of romance. But she has to hide everything because of her conservative, rigid husband.
All these descriptions did not even touch the original concept of “Modern Family.” Oh Na Ra’s character, who was supposed to be the Korean equivalent of Claire Dunphy, doesn’t even have any similarity within their backgrounds.
The only resemblance in both series is that it involves extended family and possibly father-daughter relationships.
“As a ‘Modern Family’ fan, I’m seriously scratching my head over this…
So they’re making a Korean version of ‘Modern Family,’ but then they go and make the wife hide her past relationships because her husband is all conservative and old-fashioned? Like, what?
I saw it being promoted as a “remake” all over Instagram, so I got curious and did some digging. It turns out that there’s only one article about it, and it just calls it a ‘Korean version of Modern Family’ without actually saying that it’s an official remake. So, who knows if they even bought the rights?
But honestly, the storyline feels way too different. The way they’re promoting it is just ridiculous. It’s further off from the original than ‘The Heirs’ ever was from a Korean’ Gossip Girl.’ ‘Modern Family’ is more than just a sitcom with a few funny family moments, you know?”

Fans’ Protesting on Social Media and Online Communities
Hence, fans are rallying in social media and online communities, demanding KBS to leave the US series alone. They want KBS to promote “Villain’s Country,” an original drama and not a remake of “Modern Family.”
- “It’s just the title that’s ‘Modern Family,’ but it’s not a remake at all.”
- “I was looking forward to it because they said it was a remake.”
- “Just stop it already, damn.”
- “The appeal of ‘Modern Family’ was its diverse family structures… gay couples, multicultural families, adoptees, etc., all clashing and coming together. Each episode ended with a message reflecting on the meaning of family. The title was ‘Modern’ ‘Family’ after all.”
- “Eh, I don’t see any remake elements here.”
- “Even if it’s not a remake, they keep randomly borrowing the names of foreign movies and dramas these days. They need to stop.”
- “They’re just trying to benefit from ‘Modern Family.’ Just drop it. Which part exactly is supposed to be a remake, haha.”
- “I like ‘Modern Family’ enough to rewatch it multiple times. If you’re not going to do it right, don’t do it at allㅠㅠ”
- “There aren’t any female characters like that in ‘Modern Family.’ How is this a Korean version?”
"Korean remake of Modern Family will be showcasing a life of a then flight attendant with a long list of love interest, who tries to hide those glamorous love life for her conservative husband."

Finally, what do you think about this issue? After all, it is still too early to say whether “Villain’s Country” will be really portraying all the factors within “Modern Family.” But so far, do you think it’s better for the new drama to be promoted as an original series or a remake instead?
