South Korean entertainment industry also suffered a massive change after impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol eventually arrested. And yet, despite all the political turmoil and massive chaos, the hallyu wave remains strong and unbothered. Join us as we dive deep into the impact of Yoon Suk Yeol’s arrest to the Korean entertainment industry and how it actually survived.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol Arrested
For the first time in history, an impeached South Korean president, Yoon Suk Yeol, was arrested by an investigative agency.
On January 15, after long, frustrating, and previously failed attempt, officials from the Corruption Investigation Office eventually arrested impeached president of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, outside of his official residence in Seoul.
This event marks an unprecedented moment in the history of South Korea’s constitutional government. Why? Because it is the first time a sitting president has been arrested by an investigative body.
Yes, he’s not the first former president to face criminal charges. However, some of the previous presidents ended up behind bars after leaving office. But Yoon Suk Yeol? This impeached president made history as the first South Korean sitting president arrested while he was still in power. And it was all because of the shocking Martial Law controversy happening last year.
If found guilty, South Korean impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol could face severe consequences after arrested. And these consequences range from hefty fines and prison time to, technically, the death penalty. Although, South Korea has upheld a moratorium on executions for decades.
Whatever the outcome, this moment marks a dramatic chapter in South Korean history and a crucial test of its democratic institutions.
Korean Entertainment Suffers Massive Changes
Due to this arrest, Korean entertainment had to pause their shows and programs to cover this breaking news.
KBS 1TV made some serious last-minute changes by canceling popular shows like “Screening Humanity,” “AM Plaza,”. Not only that, they even canceled the fan-favorite daily drama “My Merry Marriage.”
Instead, they went all in on live news coverage. It forced viewers glued to updates on how South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was arrested and the chaos that followed.
Suffice to say that it was a huge day for news, but not so great for the Korean entertainment community.
Over at SBS, things were a little less drastic. While most of the regular shows stayed on track, they extended their SBS 8 News broadcast. Hence, it meant a slight delay for the highly anticipated “Kick a Goal” episode. This show featured the opening G-League match between FC Topgirl and FC Actionista. So fans had been waiting excitedly for this one. Fortunately, the delay was just ten minutes. Still, they completely scrapped the rerun schedules for more news updates.
Meanwhile, MBC pulled the plug on their daily drama “Desperate Mrs. Seonju”. They then replaced it with a special edition of MBC News Desk. Earlier in the day, even “Live Broadcast: This Morning” got bumped in favor of live news coverage.
Also, Channel A had to cancel highly-anticipated episode of “Groom Class,” which was supposed to showcase Shim Hyung Tak and Saya’s journey into parenthood for the first time.
Korean Entertainment Industry Still Thrives Even After President Yoon Suk Yeol Arrested
While all the above cancels may be trivial from political perspectives, it was a massive turn of events for Korean entertainment industry.
After all, when shows were postponed, production teams lose crucial momentum as public interest wanes. Not to mention the damage caused for their financial and reputation could be severe when the show was canceled entirely.
However, despite all the massive commotion happening after South Korean impeached president Yoon Suk Yeol arrested, the hallyu community continue thriving. Production teams quickly adapted, networks returned to their regular programming, and fans remained loyal, eagerly awaiting the return of their favorite shows. The situation may have caused temporary disruptions, but it didn’t derail the unstoppable momentum of the Hallyu wave.
Even in the face of unprecedented political turmoil, Korean entertainment industry demonstrated its ability to bounce back stronger than ever. Yes, the arrest of a sitting president might have been a historic first. Yet, it didn’t stop the world from tuning in to Korean content.
So, stay tuned because the show goes on and it’s going to be bigger than ever this year!
