“Compared to ordinary time bombs shown in other movies, ‘Sound-responsive Bomb’ in DECIBEL has different features. Once it reaches a certain noise threshold, the remaining time to the explosion will drop by half. When it happens in the place like a football stadium or a waterpark, where the big noise can be generated from anywhere, the protagonist cannot control the noise, being driven into extremity, so I thought it will give more tension to the movie.”

Synopsis

Former Lieutenant Commander Do-yeong (Kim Rae-won) suffers from PTSD caused by a harrowing submarine accident that claimed the lives of his colleagues. Despite being revered as a national hero, he carries guilt and is tormented by his estrangement from his family.

One day, Do-yeong receives a cryptic phone call from a mysterious person, threatening to blow up a football stadium with improvised explosives triggered by a certain decibel. Just in time, Do-yeong saves innocent lives, but the terrorist remains determined to cause more casualties, including targeting Do-yeong’s wife and daughter. Now he must race against the clock to track the terrorist down and save his family as well as other people. Amid this impossible task, the unforeseen consequences of a secret he buried in the depths of the sea resurface.

The director Hwang In-ho, who has high-quality directing skills regardless of genre, and who shows excellence in character-driven storytelling, introduces this Korean movie as “an action movie in which characters are important, and audiences can have fun following those characters” with various attractions & overwhelming tensions. Meanwhile, Lee Jong-suk plays the role of ‘the bomb designer who once was a Navy Lieutenant & Mensa member,’ who tightens the confrontation between the two characters and raises the tension of the story to a higher level. He creates dangerous situations with the sound-responsive bomb all around the city and gives inevitable missions to the main character. As our protagonist wants to stop the bombing, he has no choice but to follow the orders of the bomber. No one knows his intention or the reason for terrorism, but he continues to warn of another bomb attack and drag the audience into an unpredictable story.

Jung Sang-hoon as Oh Dae-o

An all-round entertainer who appears in plays, musicals, and entertainment shows, as well as movies and TV series, Jung Sang-hoon, makes his appearance in the movie as ‘a journalist who happens to get involved in the terror incident,’ making the story richer while helping the protagonist and following the lead.
