On August 29, multiple Indonesian news outlets reported that Indonesia and Korea will commemorate the 50th anniversary of their relations by jointly producing a movie titled “Second Homeland” (Tanah Air Kedua).
According to Pikiran Rakyat news outlet, Garut Regent Rudy Gunawan and South Korean Ambassador Lee Sang Deok had a crucial meeting at the Korean Embassy in Jakarta on Friday, August 25, 2023. One of the topics discussed was the collaboration plan for making the movie “Second Homeland.”
Rudy Gunawan stated that the film “Second Homeland” aims to be a tangible proof of cooperation between Indonesia and Korea, with its in-depth story and close cross-country collaboration. It serves as an appreciation of history and an opportunity to forge strong cultural ties between the two nations.
“Second Homeland” Movie
The “Second Homeland” follows the story of Yang Chil Seong (Yanagawa Shichise or Komarudin). He was born in Wanjoo, North Jeolla, on May 29, 1919, and lived in Indonesia during World War II.
When he was 23, the Japanese forcibly took him to Indonesia and named him Yanagawa Shichise. He served as a guard for prisoners of war in Bandung, with nobody initially aware that Yang Chil Seong was a young man from South Korea.
After gaining independence from Japan, Indonesian soldiers captured Yang Chil Seong and some Japanese soldiers. Surprisingly, they treated them well during their captivity. Moved by this kindness, Yang Chil Seong and his fellow soldiers decided to join the Indonesian soldiers, Pangeran Papak team. Moreover, they fought side by side to achieve independence against the Dutch. Yang Chil Seong had exceptional skills in creating bombs, bullets, and other extensive knowledge needed to fight the Dutch forces.
Due to his skills and bravery, the Dutch authorities relentlessly pursued him. Unfortunately, they captured and executed him, along with other soldiers originally from Japan, in 1949. The Dutch newspaper Nederlandsche Dagbladpers documented the execution and published it on February 21, 1949. The Indonesian government honors Yang Chil Seong as a hero for his courage in fighting for Indonesian independence. Yang Chil Seong was buried in the Tomb of Heroes in Garut as a tribute to his contributions.
