After surprising the whole Kpop community with her epic performance of Charlie Puth’s Dangerously, BABYMONSTER (BAEMON) Ahyeon faces a significant racial slur controversy. So, what happened to BABYMONSTER Ahyeon, and what caused the controversy? Continue reading for a more detailed report.
BABYMONSTER Ahyeon Faces Massive Issue on Racial Slur Controversy
They haven’t even made their official debut yet, but YG new girl group BABYMONSTER has faced a severe racial controversy.
An online community post raised an issue on YG new girl group, BABYMONSTER (BAEMON) member Ahyeon. According to the post, BABYMONSTER Ahyeon used severe racial slurs and inappropriate language during one of her school performances.
To make matters worse, the group’s agency, YG Entertainment, did nothing about the issue. Fans pointed out that it was in contrast to what had happened during the previous controversy when a former YG trainee Julie Han faced a similar problem.
What Happened Behind BABYMONSTER Ahyeon’s Controversy?
The online community post revealed a video when BABYMONSTER Ahyeon showcased her skills during a performance at Hanlim Arts High School.
In the video, BABYMONSTER Ahyeon performed Nicki Minaj’s song, Feeling Myself. And while the performance was amazing, BABYMONSTER Ahyeon was dangerously rapping to all the song’s explicit lyrics, including the “N-word”: a term considered discriminatory against black people.

Not only that, BABYMONSTER Ahyeon also rapped one of Cardi B’s song lyrics that stated, “my big fat ass got all the boys hooked”.
Knowing she was only 16 years old and a minor, fans believed the lyrics were highly inappropriate.
Was it YG’s or Ahyeon’s Responsibility?
As a result of this performance, international fans expressed anger against BABYMONSTER Ahyeon and YG Entertainment.
The first reason is that Ahyeon is one of the fluent English-speaking members of BABYMONSTER. Therefore, it was almost impossible that she didn’t recognize word’s meaning and the message it carries out.
The fact that BABYMONSTER Ahyeon understands that it is highly offensive to utter the N-word, knowing that she’s not black but dangerously did it anyway, was a massive issue that international fans could not ignore.
Secondly and most importantly, fans are furious at YG Entertainment which keeps pushing the “swag” image on their idols without giving them a proper education.
Fans believe that the company forces their idols to emulate the false persona of a rapper. YG seems to believe that all their rappers must imitate certain personas portrayed by Western rappers without a proper understanding of the “rap culture”.

Some fans even stated that “since Ahyeon is Korean, she wouldn’t know”-reason can no longer hold up. That is because information is widely accessible these days. Therefore, idols are responsible for their own music, songs, and cultural education without fully relying on the company. It is simply a responsibility that comes with the job.
Besides, BABYMONSTER Ahyeon has been learning English since she was 5. So, there was no way she didn’t research or at least recognize the word’s meaning.

An Unfortunate Taint to Her Epic Cover Performance to Charlie Puth’s DANGEROUSLY
It is truly unfortunate because this racial slur controversy has tarnished BABYMONSTER Ahyeon’s reputation, especially after her epic performance to Charlie Puth’s Dangerously.
Previously, during a BABYMONSTER evaluation session, Ahyeon showcased an impressive vocal and technique with a performance of Dangerously, a song by Charlie Puth. This performance immediately went viral on the internet and social media.
On top of that, Ahyeon even gained praise from BLACKPINK Jennie during a practice session. According to Jennie, she has the most talent among the BABYMONSTER members.

While many other fans sided with Ahyeon because it was only one mistake, it still caused a massive and unfair controversy knowing a former YG trainee Julie Han suspectedly left the company due to the same issue.
They legit removed Julie Han (former YG/BLACK LABEL trainee) from the company for saying the N-word, and now fans are asking twt users to stop sharing this video to protect Ahyeon’s image, like be fr –pic.twitter.com/wZ4EXoZeG6 pic.twitter.com/XkIkN14zem

That is why fans petitioned YG Entertainment, demanding that Ahyeon issue an official apology to the black community. The apology will demonstrate Ahyeon’s willingness to take responsibility for her mistake and give her a better opportunity for personal growth.
