Have you ever seen someone processing French truffles using the most horrifying methods? That is probably what fans feel when they see BABYMONSTER members today. Just a few hours after they released the “FOREVER” comeback single, members of BABYMONSTER must face unforeseen criticism for the English lyrics. So, what was wrong with the English lyrics in their recent comeback? Dive deeper into the issue with us below.
BABYMONSTER Members Release “FOREVER” Comeback MV
It seems that the road to success is exceptionally tricky for the new 5th-generation brilliant rookies, BABYMONSTER. After the massive controversy surrounding their debut last year, BABYMONSTER members must face continuous criticism for their latest comeback, “FOREVER.”
On July 1 at midnight KST, BABYMONSTER released an official MV for their latest comeback single, “FOREVER.” The stunning music video took settings in what seems to be a fashion event, showcasing the stunning princess-like elegance of all 7 members of BABYMONSTER.
Unforeseen Criticism Against English Lyrics in BABYMONSTER “FOREVER” Comeback
While the BABYMONSTER has shown impeccable performances with their rap, dancing, and vocals, the members still face unexpected criticism immediately after releasing the “FOREVER” comeback.
Unlike the previous criticism that mostly focused on the outdated design of the promotional approaches, this time, fans have criticized BABYMONSTER for the English lyrics in “FOREVER” comeback.
Why?
It is simply because BABYMONSTER “FOREVER” features more English lyrics than the Korean language.
Not only that, but Korean fans began bombarding BABYMONSTER in online communities because the song has allegedly overused English and only featured Korean only for some cheap-looking parts like “ssagaji” and the “ga-na-da-ra” basics.
Therefore, while these fans are highly praising BABYMONSTER members for their impressive all-rounded skills, their disappointment on what the group has presented was equally overwhelming.
- “There’s no Korean at all!”
- “What’s going on with these words?”
- “Why is everything in English? And the little bit that is in Korean is just some ganadara nonsense…”
- “So rude…”
- “These aren’t even real lyrics.”
- “Forget the lyrics… The song itself isn’t catchy. If a song is good, it sticks even if the words are in English. But this one just has the members rambling on and on. It feels like a waste of their talent.”
- “YG Entertainment put together such an amazing lineup of members, but then their music is just—”
- “Freaking ganadaramabasa.”
- “Maybe it’s time to let professional songwriters handle this. I don’t get why they’re stuck on this tacky concept. It’s not 2024, it feels like it’s from a decade ago.”
- “So outdated.”
- “Ganadaramaba-ssagaji? LOL.”
- “Who wrote these lyrics?”
English Lyrics Controversy in Kpop Girl Group’s Songs – Your Thoughts?
It seems that Korean fans have long started to become offended that Kpop girl groups have been using more and more English in their song lyrics. However, with Kpop going into the global market, this is actually considered unavoidable.
In fact, Korean researchers have also stated that global consumers of Kpop have been dominating the market compared to domestic consumers. Therefore, they believe that there’s no need for Kpop to limit the language to Korean only.
“After the global success of BLACKPINK, the girl group market, which was previously centered on domestic consumption, expanded overseas, leading to an increase in the use of English. The more overseas consumers a group has, the higher the proportion of English used.
The MZ generation has no aversion to English lyrics, and this phenomenon is reflected in the charts. Therefore, there’s no longer a need to limit lyrics to Korean.”
Chief Researcher Kim Jin Woo of Circle Chart.
But what about you? Do you think it’s acceptable for Kpop groups to use more English lyrics in their songs, just like BABYMONSTER did with “FOREVER”? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
