BTS Leader RM Personal Information Illegally Accessed by KORAIL Employee

KORAIL Employee Illegally Accessed Personal Information of BTS Leader RM

On March 1, SBS News reported exclusively that a KORAIL employee had illegally looked into the personal information of a BTS member. According to the report, the particular employee had not only looked into the BTS member’s train destinations but also where he lived and, most terribly, his cellphone number.

SBS News further revealed that the BTS member KORAIL employee hacked was BTS leader RM.

What Happened?

In their exclusive report, SBS News revealed that KORAIL was conducting an internal audit when they caught employee “A”, searching for BTS leader RM personal information in the company’s passenger database.

Moreover, the KORAIL employee also searched through the database regarding RM’s various personal activities. Firstly, they searched for the ticket number RM had specifically purchased. Then, they also accessed information about his home address and phone number that RM had used to register at the KORAIL website.

SBS News then specifically mentioned an example where the KORAIL employee secretly looked up RM’s personal information for his trip from Seoul to Dong Daegu.

According to the report, A started searching through the database for RM’s personal information in 2019. They then continued doing so until 2021.

From 2019 to 2021, the KORAIL employee accessed RM’s personal information and itinerary in a total of 18 times.

Apparently, KORAIL employee A was a member of the company’s IT department. This department is among the ones with official authorization to access the company’s databases for business purposes. Particularly, KORAIL’s IT department was responsible for developing, operating, and maintaining KORAIL’s database.

Since A was working at the department, A had abused their rights. They had neglected their duties and illegally accessed the database for personal purposes.

And all this revelation was because someone had reported A for suspicious behavior. A had told an acquaintance they could just find out where RM was going. And they did it simply out of curiosity.

My friend informed me where RM was sitting so I could pick a nearby seat.
I looked at it simply because I was curious. Now, I am reflecting on my mistakes.”

Official Statement and Responses from BTS Leader RM and KORAIL

Following the appalling reveal in the internal audit, KORAIL confirmed the report and immediately suspended the employee.

“We have confirmed that ‘A’ had illegally accessed personal information without permission. However, nothing is certain about whether A has leaked the information to third parties outside the company.”

And after the issue went viral, it immediately reached the victim himself, BTS leader RM.

After learning the shocking news, RM—also known as Kim Namjoon or Namjoon—posted a personal reaction. He posted the news article about the illegal access on his Instagram story, with reactions that represented a grinning face with sweat emoji 😅.

This is the second time RM has had to suffer from a privacy violation. Previously, a worse case happened after information about his temple visit was leaked to the media.
