Update from Defense Minister indicated BTS would NOT get any exemption for their mandatory military service despite all their massive homework. Instead, they may continue performing overseas for national interest during their military enlistment with a special BTS 2022 “alternative service”. Check out the following reports for a complete update and see why ARMY is furious about this decision!
Defense Minister Gives NO EXEMPTION for BTS Military Enlistment 2022 – a COMPLETE Update!
Following the long discussion about BTS military enlistment in 2022, Defense Minister finally gave a crucial update that BTS will not get any exemption for military service.
On August 1, Military Manpower Administration commissioner Lee Ki Sik stated that South Korea is not planning on giving BTS military exemption. That is because involving pop culture artists in the military exemption may break the entire practice and idea of the military.
“Adding pop culture artists to military service exemption can break the entire framework of the practice, so we are carefully considering options.”
Lee Ki Sik, The Commissioner of Military Manpower Administration.
South Korea is Considering “Alternative Service” for BTS
Therefore, since the military exemption is impossible for BTS, South Korea is considering getting them a special “alternative service” during their possible enlistment in 2022.
According to Lee Ki Sik, the South Korean government is taking a perspective from the overall framework of alternative services for BTS. Since BTS is gaining more and more popularity and reputation that also benefits the country, the government is taking it into consideration. However, the government will still have to maintain the “principles of fairness and equity”.
That is why National Defense Minister Lee Jong Sup stated once again that the ministry is highly cautious about military exemption discussions.
“There should be ways to solve this issue without infringing principles of fairness and equity and reducing military service resources.”
National Defense Minister Lee Jong Sup.
BTS Will Continue Performing for National Interest During Military Service
So, what is this 2022 “alternative service” stated in the ministry’s BTS military enlistment update?
While nothing is offical just yet, Minister Lee Jong Sup stated that the government is looking for ways for BTS to continue performing during their military service. Therefore, as long as the purpose is for national interest and benefits, the government will allow BTS to continue performing while serving in the military service.
“The Defense Department reviewed the alternative service for BTS military enlistment in consideration and came to a conclusion.
As long as it doesn’t violate the principles of fairness and equality, the Defense Department can help BTS practice and perform in the scope of national interest and benefits.”
National Defense Minister Lee Jong Sup.
In the Update, Minister Lee Believes BTS Military Enlistment Will Provide More Benefits
The minister added that BTS enlisting in the military could benefit both sides. That is because he believes serving in the military can improve BTS’s popularity. And at the same time, the fact that BTS members are enlisting in the military can also enhance the popularity of the military service idea itself.
“Many people do think highly of military service itself, and I think (BTS members enlisting) can actually help them with their popularity.”
National Defense Minister Lee Jong Sup.
Does it mean South Korea relies on BTS to create a military service trend?
South Korea Gives BTS NO Exemption Update but Massive Homework Instead
It is astounding that South Korea insists on not giving BTS military exemption, looking at the amount of homework the country has given to their megastar.
1. Official Bidding Ambassador for World Expo 2030 Busan
The first massive homework South Korea has given BTS is the recent appointment as bidding ambassador for World Expo 2030 Busan.
Previously, it was revealed that the Busan government went through a long and challenging process to convince BTS for the ambassadorship. They even involved the fathers of BTS members Jimin and Jungkook in the request that took almost a year to complete.
Within their immense and intense tasks as the bidding ambassador, BTS is expected to hold a global concert in October. Not only that, but they will also personally guide the BIE team visiting South Korea next year. And finally, Busan also asked BTS to attend and speak at the BIE General Assembly voting in November 2023.
If BTS is not getting a military exemption, they will have to proceed with this plan while serving for their mandatory enlistment. After all, the government only deferred BTS military enlistment until the end of 2022.
2. Honorary Ambassador for Seoul Tourism
Secondly, BTS is expected to continue their role as the honorary ambassador for Seoul tourism. The Seoul Metropolitan Government had asked for BTS collaboration for a 2022 version of a promotional video.
That is why BTS will reportedly make a group comeback in a special cinematic video to support and promote Seoul tourism.
3. Collaboration Song for FIFA World Cup 2022 with Hyundai Motors
Finally, even when it is not officially connected to the government, BTS will also perform in a collaboration song for FIFA World Cup 2022, which naturally will benefit South Korea the most.
This collaboration song is part of a massive project by Hyundai Motors. Since BTS has served as its official ambassador since 2018, they will continue their role and join the collaboration project.
More Update: ARMY is FURIOUS!
Following the 2022 update about no exemption for BTS military service, fans began expressing their disagreement on social media. They are furious about the decisions because they believe South Korean politicians are taking advantage of BTS despite not giving them any exemption for military service while still expecting them to work on national projects.
so basically they want bts to serve in the military AND make money for the government at the same time. this is not a "reduced exemption", this is exploitation. https://t.co/VHaPT1Km7v

not a fucking article about how hobi has literally made history, how bts are doing a World Cup song, nothing of that but they will put out dumb ass articles about how bts should serve them both in military and perform for their benefit. i really hope it DOESNT affect the boys

soo they want to continue reaping bts’ economic and global impact while denying them military exemption… because being enrolled in the army but still maintaining your day-to-day job is TOTALLY normal… leeches https://t.co/WmIfSGwNMy

How About BTS Members’ Health?
Moreover, fans are especially furious knowing that BTS has to keep promoting “national interests” while enduring challenging military enlistment simultaneously. They are worried that both duties will finally take a toll on BTS members’ health.
give them “the opportunity” to do military service and concerts as if that wouldn’t be incredibly mentally and physically draining? 🙁

….they want them to practice and perform overseas during the military service? How tf would that even look like? One week of practice, 2 LA concerts on a weekend, next week back to the military? Do they really think it looks like that? This is ridiculous.

like the fact that they want them to serve in the military AND continue doing music and performances etc is so sick and twisted like bts are not human beings to these ppl just content machines
