The recent unexpected broadcast from the South Korean broadcasting platform, tvN, has sparked more rumors and backlash that BTS Suga will soon be banned from national TV in South Korea for his DUI incident scandal. But what is the possibility, really? Will the BTS rapper truly face the same consequences as those Korean artists who have had outrageous scandals before? Let’s see what the officials said in the report below.
tvN Unexpectedly Blurs BTS Suga from Recent Broadcast
The genius rapper-producer of BTS, Suga (birth name Min Yoongi), has recently faced a DUI drunk driving scandal that resulted in a massive controversy in South Korea and overseas.
Earlier this month, he fell down in front of his apartment complex after riding an electric scooter. The police tried to help him only to find out that he had been driving the scooter in a drunk condition with a reported Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) level of 0.227%, far beyond the legal license revocation limit of 0.08%.
Since the issue has been a massive controversy due to its alarming DUI nature, the Korean public has been condemning the BTS rapper, even when he had expressed his sincere apology several times. This has then resulted in various follow-up issues, including the recent altercations involving tvN.
Korean broadcasting platform tvN recently aired an episode of “Chairman’s People” featuring a hanbok designer. Since the hanbok designer is well-known for creating outfits for BTS, the show featured some media clips of the members wearing these traditional hanboks.
Yet, unexpectedly, when displaying the BTS members, the show had reportedly blurred Suga’s face. This was reportedly due to the recent DUI incident scandal involving BTS Suga.
After the episode aired, tvN quickly uploaded clips to their YouTube channel. However, they removed them later that same day due to massive demands for the network to issue an apology to Suga. Fans are urging the broadcaster to issue a public apology to the star, criticizing their behavior as “rude” and “disrespectful.”
As of this time, tvN has not yet commented on the situation.
Blurred: South Korea’s National TV Regulations
KBS regulates the appearances of individuals involved in illegal activities or social controversies through its Broadcast Appearance Review Committee.
These “illegal activities” and “social controversies” include being booked, arrested, or sentenced to prison beyond probation for various scandals. For example, avoiding military service, misusing prescription drugs or marijuana, committing fraud, theft, gambling, assault, sexual misconduct, or any other behavior considered harmful to public order and morals.
Then, the committee will issue a ban based on the severity of the offense to the person who has violated the broadcast standards. The ban may include discouraging producers from inviting the individual to shows (“refrain from appearance invitations”), temporarily suspending appearances during ongoing legal proceedings, or altogether banning the person from appearing on KBS programs (“broadcast appearance regulation”).
Previously, KBS issued a “temporary appearance suspension” on actress Kim Sae Ron after she was booked for drunk driving in 2022 with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.2%. This ban has remained in place for two years. Along with Kim Sae Ron, there are more celebrities under this official ban from KBS.
Will KBS Really Ban BTS Suga Because of the DUI Incident Scandal?
Still, this incident resulted in further questions: Will BTS Suga be really banned from Korean national TV because of the DUI scandal?
In response to this curiosity, KBS delivered an official statement to Korean media outlets. The national broadcasting company has yet to determine a specific ban on BTS Suga.
“We are undecided on holding such a meeting for BTS’s Suga.
Suga is currently serving his alternative military duty, so he does not appear on any KBS programs. Banning BTS Suga’s appearance is not an issue that needs to be discussed or addressed immediately.
Moreover, since his case is under police investigation, we need to wait for the results.”
