With his military discharge date still months away, BTS rapper and producer Suga has been in the spotlight for an entirely different reason. Halfway through his mandatory service, BTS Suga received an official ruling regarding his DUI drunk driving accident involving an electric scooter. So, what does this mean, and how does this incident affect Suga, especially as it comes at a crucial time in his career and service? Let’s dive deep into the discussion below.
BTS Suga Receives Official Ruling for DUI Drunk Driving Accident Involving Electric Scooter
The brilliant rapper-producer of BTS, Suga (birth name Min Yoongi), has finally found himself in the finale of his DUI drunk driving accident involving an electric scooter.
After weeks of dramatic controversies, false CCTV reports from South Korea’s most prominent news sites, and countless speculations, the Seoul Western District Court finally handed down its official ruling.
Reports from the legal community on September 30 stated that Judge Lee Yuseob, from the Seoul Western District Court, handed down a summary order 3 days before.
According to the community, the judge has imposed a 15-million KRW (approximately 11,380 USD) fine on Suga for violating the Road Traffic Act due to his DUI drunk driving accident involving an electric scooter. Apparently, this amount has reportedly matched the prosecution’s previous recommendation.
Ending the Case with an Official Fine Before the Military Discharge Date
Previously, Suga was caught driving an electric scooter while intoxicated in the streets of Hannam-dong, Seoul. At the time, official reports circulated that Suga’s blood alcohol concentration was 0.227% when the police took the test on-site. This number was reportedly three times over the legal limit for license cancellation in South Korea (0.08%).
While Korean media reported various dramatic twists and controversies following the drunk driving accident, BTS Suga eventually received a summary indictment from the Seoul Court.
A summary indictment is a legal process used for less serious cases. In this process, instead of having a full trial in court, the judge decides on the punishment (such as fines or fees) by just reviewing the documents related to the case. The person involved doesn’t need to appear in court for this decision.
If the person, like Suga, thinks the decision is unfair or wrong, they can ask for a formal trial. They have seven days from the time they receive the decision to request this. The decision will then become final if they don’t ask for a trial within that time.
While this may be a relieving finale for the DUI drunk driving case, BTS Suga is facing an official fine from the court, only halfway reaching his military discharge date.
Since September 2023, BTS Suga has been fulfilling his mandatory military service, with an expected discharge date around June 2025. While the incident has certainly cast a shadow over his remaining time in service, how this will impact his career and public image moving forward remains to be seen. Hopefully, it will not have any negative implications in the upcoming future.
