Writer-Director Moon Ji-won to Feature Directorial Debut with DEAF VOICE
On May 15, Sports Chosun reported writer Moon Ji-won to debut as a director with a movie based on Masaki Maruyama’s novel Deaf Voice and will also write the script.
Barunson Studio will produce Moon Ji-won’s directorial debut. Previously, the company created the Cannes-winning film Parasite, a film by director Bong Joon-ho. In addition, the company also made Cobweb, director Kim Jee-woon’s film that will premiere at 2023 Cannes.
Moreover, the production company confirmed that Deaf Voice, directed by Moon Ji-won, will start shooting next year.
Deaf Voice
Deaf Voice (working title) will be Moon Ji-won’s first film project since her debut as a writer and director for short films. The forthcoming film is based on a novel by Masaki Maruyama, Deaf Voice: Sign Language Interpreter in Court.
Deaf Voice is a mystery thriller that follows the story of CODA (Child of Deaf Adults), a police officer skilled in sign language. He discovers unfolded evidence and sets out to find the perpetrator of a cold case murder in a deaf community 20 years ago.

“The narrative revolves around a protagonist who is between deaf and hearing, struggling to find his own identity as a child of deaf adults (CODA).”

Moon Ji-won is the writer of the Korean movie Innocent Witness (2019) and the hit drama Extraordinary Attorney Woo (2022). However, she has written and directed several short films since 2002.
Director Moon Ji-won’s short films were Keeping the Sea, Written on the Body, and Nose Nose Nose EYES. Her short films were invited to various domestic and international film festivals and won awards.
Innocent Witness (2019)
Writer Moon Ji Won’s Innocent Witness Korean movie won the Grand Prize at the Lotte Screenplay Contest. Starring actors Jung Woo Sung and Kim Hyang Gi, Innocent Witness Korean movie received sympathy from audiences. The plot centers around a main character with autism spectrum disorder who becomes the only witness in court.
And with this movie, actor Jung Woo Sung and actress Kim Hyang Gi took home numerous awards at multiple prestigious awards. Actor Jung Woo-sung won Grand Prize and Best Actor Awards at the 55th Baeksang Arts Awards, 39th Golden Cinema Film Festival, 40th Blue Dragon Film Awards, and 6th Korean Film Producers Association Awards.
Meanwhile, Kim Hyang Gi won the Best Actress Award at the 27th Korean Culture and Entertainment Awards and the 39th Korean Association of Film Critics Awards.
Extraordinary Attorney Woo (2022)
ENA’s hit drama Extraordinary Attorney Woo was Moon Ji Won’s first drama project with 16 episodes. This Korean drama depicts the struggles of Woo Young-woo, a young girl with a genius brain and autism spectrum disorder, who works as a rookie lawyer at a big law firm.
The drama has a long list of award-winning to its name. Moon Ji-won won Best Writer Award at the 2022 APAN Star Awards. Further, the hit drama won two major awards from 10 nominations at the 59th Baeksang Awards. Park Eun Bin won her first Daesang, and director Yoo In Shik received the Best Director Award for the Television section. Recently, the drama is set to enter the Emmys nomination this year.
