“Squid Game” Shocks Fans with How Many Alleged Episodes in Season 3
As we’re all waiting impatiently for the upcoming release date of “Squid Game” Season 3 on June 27, more circulating rumors about its possible episodes resulted in early disappointment and criticism from fans.
On February 10, a post went viral on the Korean online community Instiz for revealing how many episodes “Squid Game” would release for its upcoming Season 3. Not only that, but it also discussed how much budget the series had spent.
According to the post, “Squid Game” will allegedly release 6 episodes for its upcoming Season 3. This is the total number that Netflix and the production team have for this highly-anticipated blockbuster series. And knowing how much fans have waited for the show’s finale, knowing that they will only have 6 episodes left for the Season 3 was apparently upsetting.

Along with the number of episodes, the post also revealed a massive budget with total amount of 100 billion KRW (about $68.7 million USD) for both Season 2 and Season 3 of “Squid Game.” This new update created mixed reactions within online communities.
Many fans expressed their disappointment, pointing out that 6 episodes felt too short for a season with such high expectations. Some protested the long wait between seasons, with many wishing for an earlier release rather than the confirmed June 27 premiere date.
Meanwhile, others were more focused on the show’s production budget. They were shocked but excited about the reported 100 billion KRW cost for Seasons 2 and 3 combined. Despite the hefty budget, some viewers speculated that Netflix would more than recoup its investment given the series’ global success and lucrative brand collaborations.
Planned Since the Beginning: Here’s the Breakdown
While there has been no official statement from either Netflix or director Hwang Dong Hyuk, you should know that this information has been widely available for a while.
In May 2023, we previously discussed that Netflix has been working on both “Squid Game” Season 2 and Season 3 simultaneously. At the time, we had also received official updates from an exclusive report by Korean media OSEN that both seasons would consist 13 episodes in total. However, at the time, there was no information on how “Squid Game” would divide this number of episodes.
“Netflix’s Squid Game is currently filming both Seasons 2 and 3 at the same time and intends to release a total of 13 episodes worldwide.
However, whether Season 2 will consist of six episodes and Season 3 of seven episodes, or some other breakdown, will be determined after further discussions.”
OSEN report in 2023.
Then, Netflix released the Season 2 with 7 episodes. It means we only have 6 episodes remaining for “Squid Game”Season 3.

However, there is no need to worry, as everything has progressed smoothly according to the creator’s plans. From the start, Netflix and director Hwang Don Hyuk agreed to film all 13 episodes of the sequel simultaneously. The decision to divide the series into two seasons was made due to shifts in tone and direction. But their original plan has always been to release both seasons in sequence, just as intended from the beginning.
Is 6 Episodes Enough – What Do You Think?
Finally, as “Squid Game” fans eagerly count down to the Season 3 release, the debate over its number of episodes continues. While some are disappointed by the shorter season, others believe that Netflix and director Hwang Dong Hyuk have carefully planned the story’s direction.

At the end of the day, the true measure of success won’t be the number of episodes—but how well the story is conveyed. Now, will Squid Game Season 3 deliver a thrilling and satisfying conclusion? Or will it leave fans wanting more?
Only time will tell. But one thing is for sure—June 27 can’t come soon enough.
