Jennie Kim Officially Debuts as an Actress in HBO New Series, THE IDOL
Kpop diva and fashion icon Jennie Kim of BLACKPINK has officially debuted as an actress in HBO’s new series, The Idol with Lily-Rose Depp and The Weeknd.
On June 5 KST, HBO released the first episode of The Idol, showing Jennie Kim and her incredible dance skills in a defining scene.
In HBO’s The Idol, Jennie Kim played the role of Dyanne, the main character’s close friend and rival as well as a fabulous dancer. Throughout the episode, Jennie showcased her outstanding talents and charismatic presence, capturing the viewer’s attention as if she were the main character.
Unfortunately, her compelling presence received mixed reactions due to the portrayal of the dance scene Jennie Kim did in The Idol.
MIXED Reactions on Jennie’s “Sexy and Provocative” Dance Scene
During the first episode, there was a scene where Jennie Kim’s character Dyanne was asked to showcase her dance skills as an example for the main character, Jocelyn.
Throughout the scene, Jennie danced with her utmost effort, showcasing years of experience in the music industry as one of BLACKPINK’s dance icons. The scene naturally came out stunning and amazing, with Jennie as its center and focus of attention.
Unfortunately, this particular dance scene brought mixed reactions from viewers worldwide. While Jennie’s dance was undoubtedly stunning, some netizens believed the way HBO The Idol brought up the scene was too provocative, as if it was some inappropriate adult show. Worse, some viewers even thought that the show ended up looking like porn.
- “Isn’t this too much? What are the drama producers thinking?”
- “The dance moves are problematic too, but her facial expressions… Now I understand why people say it’s like porn.”
- “Apart from Jennie’s performance, I see why the drama has a low rating.”
- “What’s with her facial expression? She looks like she’s really doing it.”
- “There’s no way Jennie didn’t know this… Idol’s image is so important so I’m pretty sure she had to find out what she’s getting herself into.”
Meanwhile, Jennie’s loyal fans rallied in her defense, urging the public to respect her choices. Fans believe that Jennie Kim is now an adult who can choose her own path. They also praised her for breaking through the strict and judgmental industry to try acting in the series, no matter how controversial it is.
Besides, fans also believed that Jennie’s dance scene in HBO The Idol is nothing in comparison to many other Korean shows. So criticizing Jennie for such a “milder” dance scene was simply immature.
korean movies/dramas got actual sex scenes while jennie did a sexy dance…so what's the issue
— ⭑ (@hbicrubyjane) June 5, 2023
jennie pushing thirty and dating is an issue, jennie pushing thirty and doing choreo as an actress is an issue. some kpop stans are too out of touch with reality like 👩🏻🦯

twt kpop stans need to understand that jennie is a GROWN woman “ACTING”. these weirdos think female kpop idols are not normal people like any other artists and as grown people they can’t do whatever tf they want. imagine how stupid it is to drag a person for playing a role.

i love and admire jennie so much. it’s so nice to see a kpop idol that does not care to break these strict, weird standards that the industry be putting on idols. It’s great to see an idol being themselves, using their opportunities and she doesn’t care which is what kpop needs

Was Jennie Kim Truly Scammed into Starring in HBO THE IDOL?
Previously after its first premiere at Cannes Festival, HBO’s new series The Idol received massive criticisms from worldwide movie critics. Its review in one of the global movie review websites, Rotten Tomatoes, even reached 9% at the time, which was one of the worst scores in the website’s history. This review came from notable global reporters and critics from prominent publications, including The Rolling Stone, Variety, Vanity Fair, and The Daily Telegraph.
Today, the score has shown a significant increase to 23%, but still considered low compared to the average review scores. And all the reviewers’ comments were basically similar: the show was stiff, boring, and vulgar.

What’s more shocking was when rumors began spreading that Jennie Kim was allegedly scammed into starring in HBO The Idol. According to multiple reports, after Jennie filmed her dance scene and multiple others for the series, the production team changed The Idol’s scripts multiple times.
Therefore, the current state of The Idol might significantly deviate from the original script that Jennie received.
“In interviews with 13 members of the show’s cast and crew, Rolling Stone has learned the drastic delay was caused by Levinson taking over as director and scrapping the nearly-finished $54-75 million project to rewrite and reshoot the entire thing.
With Seimetz out of the picture, HBO handed the reins to Levinson, only to have him weaken the show’s overarching message, many sources say, by dialing up the disturbing sexual content and nudity to match — and even surpass — that of his most successful show, Euphoria.”

Therefore the script she read and found compelling is not 100% the same script it ended up being. Scripts were changed daily and scenes were shot and reshot. pic.twitter.com/B4mmYtZhD8
