The year of 2023 will be the time for actors Jo Jung Suk and Shin Se Kyung to shine the brightest! Following Shin Se Kyung’s legendary appearance as the adult Tan Ya in Arthdal Chronicles Season 2, she will also portray a completely different role in an upcoming historical (sageuk) drama.
On December 23, Korean media reported that Jo Jung Suk and Shin Se Kyung will star in a new historical drama together, Spy. And what is most interesting is that Spy is expected to become next year’s sageuk masterpiece with the stunning blend of tragic romance and revenge stories.
What is SPY New Drama About?
Stemming from the root of a devastating love story in the palace, Spy depicts the tale of a distressed King of Joseon and a woman who slid herself into the palace to get her revenge.
King Lee In is a rising King of Joseon. Yet, his reign is full of a menacing political power struggle continuously endangers his existence. At the same time, Kang Hee Soo is a woman who’s planning to get revenge by sliding herself into the palace to seduce the King.
And during these desperate times, King Lee In and Kang Hee Soo finally meet. However, instead of successfully seducing Lee In, Kang Hee Soo finds herself drawn by the distressed King herself.
Will Kang Hee Soo finally succumb to her feelings and embrace her affection for the King? Or will she continue fighting for her revenge?
This new Korean historical (sageuk) drama, Spy, is a masterpiece coming from the magic hands of writer Kim Sung Deok. Previously, he and writer Shin Ha Eun managed to entice Korean drama enthusiasts with the inspiring story of The Crowned Clown starring Yeo Jin Goo and Lee Se Young. Today, Kim Sung Deok will be going solo as a drama screenwriter for the first time in years after Girls’ Love Story in 2015.
Did They Accept the Roles?
So, did the two prominent actors already agree to take part in the new historical drama Spy?
Unfortunately, both Jo Jung Suk and Shin Se Kyung’s agencies stated that the actors were still positively reviewing the drama. Therefore, while Jo Jung Suk’s appearance is almost 100% confirmed, Shin Se Kyung’s appearance is still tentative.
“Jo Jung Suk has received an offer to appear in ‘Sejak’ (Spy) and is positively reviewing it.”

Jo Jung Suk and Shin Se Kyung Time to SHINE!
Finally, if both actors confirm their appearances, Jo Jung Suk will play the role of distressed King Lee In. At the same time, Shin Se Kyung will again mark her name in a historical drama as the maiden who seeks revenge, Kang Hee Soo.
Aside from the fact that it will be the first time for both actors to pair as a couple, Spy drama will be another opportunity for Jo Jung Suk and Shin Se Kyung to shine.
It has been a while since Jo Jung Suk’s last appearance in the Hospital Playlist series. And while Jo Jung Suk has been an outstanding actor with his charming and perfect mix of comedy and dramatic expressions, having Jo Jung Suk playing the serious role of a distressed King with all his inner battle and conflicts will be another performance you must definitely not miss!
Shin Se Kyung: The Underrated Actress? Not Anymore!
At the same time, the year 2023 will finally be the time for talented and versatile actress Shin Se Kyung to shine.
With almost 20 years of career in the Korean entertainment industry, former child actress Shin Se Kyung still receives mixed reactions for her versatile acting. While experienced Korean drama enthusiasts praise her rich portrayal of different types of characters, others criticize her for her alleged flat expressions, especially when pairing up with prominent top-tier actors like Yoo Ah In and Lee Dong Wook.
But is it really true, though?
In fact, Shin Se Kyung still has loyal fans and enthusiasts for her previous dramas, The Bride of Habaek with Nam Joo Hyuk, and Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung with Cha Eun Woo. The chemistry she built with the two actors was truly one of a kind. And it will forever remain in our hearts as one of the hottest and sweetest couples in Korean drama history.
With her upcoming performance as the adult Tan Ya in Arthdal Chronicles 2, and another showcase as a woman with inner conflicts of love and revenge, Shin Se Kyung will no longer be an underrated actress. Instead, she will once again prove that she deserves all the love and all the good roles in top-tier Korean dramas.
