Kpoppost’s latest K-Wave Business Talk with STRA event delivered an insightful discussion on how technology, culture, and innovation intersect in the rapidly growing K-Pop industry. The session shed light on STRA’s journey from a Samsung-funded music technology startup to a leading force tackling language barriers in the global K-pop fan community.
The Journey from Samsung to STRA – K-pop and Technology Innovation
STRA began as an internal venture within Samsung, initially focused on developing CODA, a music chord transcription app for guitar players.
However, by 2021, facing monetization and market fit challenges, the company pivoted to the booming K-pop industry. CEO Kim Yong-ho acknowledged that Samsung’s support was instrumental in their early development.
“Without Samsung, this wouldn’t have happened. I needed seed funds to start, and Samsung provided not only financial backing but also invaluable education through their internal venture program. I learned startup methodologies, tested our concepts internally, and even received legal consulting—all of which laid the foundation for STRA.”

Tackling K-pop’s Language Barrier
With over 200 million global fans—growing by 29% annually—K-pop has become a cultural juggernaut. Despite this, 96% of fans cannot fully understand Korean lyrics, which often blend poetic expressions, musicality, and unique fandom terms like “Fandom Hybrid Language” (a mix of idol fandom slang and traditional Korean language). STRA’s flagship product, Kpop Pro App, launched in May 2023, directly addresses this gap.
Now boasting 400,000 downloads and 60,000 monthly active users, the app provides accurate translations and timing for lyrics, helping fans better connect with their favorite songs. However, creating such an app wasn’t without challenges.
“Lyrics are poetic and prioritize rhythm over meaning, which standard translation algorithms struggle with. On top of that, there are unique fandom words that don’t exist in normal Korean. Our AI needed specific adjustments to handle these nuances.”
Kim Yong-ho.
A Global Vision for K-pop Fans
Understanding that K-pop is a global phenomenon, STRA intentionally built a diverse workforce to cater to fans worldwide. This global-first approach has positioned the company as a leader in breaking cultural and linguistic barriers.
Additionally, Kim Yong-ho highlighted the broader impact of K-pop on global culture. With millions of people learning Korean, motivated by their love for K-pop, platforms like STRA play a crucial role in deepening this cultural exchange.
Engaging Discussions and Future Outlook
The session concluded with an engaging Q&A segment, where attendees asked thought-provoking questions about the app’s AI technology, challenges in translating complex lyrics, and STRA’s future plans. The dialogue emphasized the importance of continuous innovation to meet the demands of a growing global audience.
