Director Hong Jong Chan, who helmed the Netflix hit original series “Juvenile Justice,” will direct the upcoming drama series. In addition, his latest project “, Mr. Plankton,” will be available on Netflix on November 8.
Webtoon “Get Schooled”
The upcoming Korean drama adaptation series is based on the popular Naver webtoon of the same name, “Get Schooled.” The action-packed school drama series explores the relationships between students, parents, and teachers.
This drama portrays the collapse of educational authorities due to students’ bad behavior, while parents are unaware of the issue. This situation led to the creation of a new agency, the Teacher Protection Bureau, under the Ministry of Education. They sent field supervisors to problematic schools for teacher protection.
The series’ main lead is an adult who is fearless of juvenile delinquents and wants to teach them what is right and wrong.
Kim Nam Gil received an offer to play the lead role of Na Hwa Jin for this upcoming drama production. He is a field supervisor and a strategist from the Teacher Protection Bureau who fights to uphold justice and peace.
He is portrayed as a ‘six-sided human,’ boasting perfect mental, physical, and intellectual attributes. In addition, people know him as the ‘Grim Reaper’ for his fearlessness toward absurdity, intimidation, and compromise.
Webtoon “Get Schooled” Criticism and Controversy
According to reports, the popular webtoon has gained criticism and faced significant controversies involving physical punishments against students, racism, and feminism.
One of the controversies surrounding the webtoon involves the now-deleted episode 125, which sparked outrage due to racism. This episode contained racist content and used derogatory slurs like ‘Yellow Monkey,’ and the ‘N-word.’
Although the creator initially intended to depict the situation of multicultural and immigrant families to illustrate current social problems in Korea, it, unfortunately, promoted discrimination against these groups.
The episode features a middle school student named Hwang Ho Jun, who lives in a rural area of Korea and claims to be the only “pure Korean” in his class. Further, the episode includes the character Lee Mook Hyun, who is depicted as a bully of Ethiopian descent. He mocks a biracial white teacher by asking, “Have you ever heard the term ‘yellow monkey’ in America?” To which the teacher responds with a racially derogatory term aimed at Black individuals, using the ‘N-word.’
These scenes have sparked a major controversy on social media platforms in the US. This issue led to the suspension of the series in North America on September 16, 2023. In response to user inquiries regarding the series, webtoon said they had removed the racist content from the platform. Moreover, after a long wait, the webtoon series resumed airing on January 28, 2024.

Although the racist content has been removed, we don’t know how far the life adaptation will be adapted from the original story. Therefore, there are still concerns about its adaptation into a drama.
