After a series of internal audits and investigations, Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) decided to kick out the employee who had illegally accessed BTS RM personal information, closing the case with a well-deserved ending. Check out the following report for complete updates about the BTS leader RM and KORAIL employee case.
KORAIL Kicked Out the Employee Who Illegally Accessed Personal Information of BTS Leader RM
BTS leader RM had recently become a victim of a privacy violation case after an employee of Korea Railroad Corporation, commonly known as KORAIL, illegally accessed his personal information numerous times.
Previously, SBS News reported that the KORAIL employee had illegally hacked the personal information of BTS leader RM from the company’s passenger database. The employee accessed his personal activities, including RM’s home address, phone number, travel route, seating arrangements, and more. And they had done 18 times in a 3-year span from 2019 to 2021.
Since the employee was part of the KORAIL IT department, it means that they had abused the duty and rights they hold under the position. Therefore, KORAIL decided to punish the employee without leniency and kick them out of the company.
E-Daily exclusive report on March 29 revealed that KORAIL had given severe punishment to the employee who had illegally accessed the personal information of BTS leader RM.
According to the report, KORAIL had voted to kick out employee A, an IT development staff who had violated the privacy of BTS leader RM. They made use of their position and accessed the system without permission out of curiosity.
Closing the Case with a Well-Deserved Ending
Furthermore, E-Daily also mentioned that the audit and disciplinary committee initially demanded the employee be suspended from their duty. However, further investigation revealed that the employee was eligible and subject to a much stronger disciplinary punishment.
During the investigation, the KORAIL employee admitted to checking RM’s reservation history to see whether he was actually there. They then let their friends know so they could get nearby seats. And the reason behind all the privacy violations was simply because they were curious about BTS leader RM.
According to the report, there were 4 degrees of disciplinary actions in KORAIL: reprimand, pay cut, suspension, and dismissal.
The investigation result showed that the employee had collected the passenger’s personal information outside of business purposes. The degree of the violation they had done was so severe that it constituted gross negligence.
Initially, the KORAIL audit voted for suspension against their employee. However, during the subsequent meeting, the disciplinary committee came to a final decision of dismissing the employee. That is because the degree of violation that the employee had done was not only severe but also unforgivable.
In light of the incident, KORAIL also revealed that no personal information was leaked to the public.
Finally, the KORAIL employee involved in BTS leader RM privacy violation case still has the chance to file a retrial until March 31.
Preventing Such Incident from Happening Again in the Future
During the final decision, the disciplinary committee also hoped that KORAIL would take extensive measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents. They suggested function improvements such as providing eligible reasons and approval to the system when inquiring about personal information. The committee also requested periodic checks on the proper management of this sensitive information.
However, in regards to the request, KORAIL company responded that they have yet to be able to confirm anything.
“It is difficult to officially confirm because of personal information issues.”
KORAIL.
At the end of the day, everything comes back to the personal conscience and integrity of the company’s personnel. No matter how strict the rule they apply, people with low integrity and mentality will always find ways to violate them to get what they want.
Therefore, the better advice for KORAIL would be better selections and evaluations of their employees. And when such things happen again in the future, it doesn’t only end with disciplinary but also legal action.
