Approaching the end of the year, KBS revealed to have banned 6 more Korean artists due to various scandals and controversies. So, who are they, and what did they do? Check out the following reports for the full details of KBS-banned artists in 2022.
KBS Banned Appearance of Korean Celebrities Involved in Social Scandals and Controversies
On December 21, Korean media reported that South Korea’s national broadcaster Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) had banned 6 Korean artists this year due to their various scandals and controversies.
According to the report, KBS banned Korean artists based on their rules regulating the appearance of artists who get themselves involved in ‘illegal or immoral acts that caused social controversies’.
These controversies include military service avoidance, chronic use of drugs and marijuana smoking, Fraud/theft/gambling, assault and sexual harassment, civil/criminal prosecution cases, and disruptions of public morals and social orders.
KBS follows the guidelines from the South Korean court in taking temporary measures. Therefore, the court will issue an order of ‘recommendation to refrain from appearing in public appearances’, ‘temporary suspension of appearances’, and ‘restriction on broadcast appearances’, depending on the severity of the case, and KBS will follow the guidelines.
6 New Artists on KBS Ban List
The year of 2022 was full of unexpected scandals and controversies among Korean artists. Some of them proved to have just been misunderstandings, indeed. However, there were some scandals and controversies of several Korean artists that proved to be true. And this has caused various criticisms towards everyone involved.
That is why strict measurements must be applied to several Korean artists whose scandals and controversies have been undoubtedly proven. And KBS decided to ban these additional 6 Korean artists due to their recent scandals and controversies.
1. Kim Sae Ron
The first on the KBS-banned list of Korean artists with scandals and controversies is actress Kim Sae Ron. Kim Sae Ron caused a terrible accident earlier this year due to drunk driving.
With a high blood alcohol level of 0.2, Kim Sae Ron crashed into a guardrail, a street tree, and a transformer while driving, resulting in a blackout for the whole block and causing businesses to stop operating.
Due to this accident, Kim Sae Ron lost her driving license, and KBS temporarily banned her public appearances.
2. Kwak Do Won
Secondly, KBS banned veteran actor Kwak Do Won due to the same DUI controversies. The actor was caught falling asleep in his car after allegedly driving 11 km (about 7 miles) with a blood alcohol level far higher than the license revocation level.
KBS just lifted actor Kwak Do Won’s appearance restrictions last year due to the “Me Too” controversy. However, they had to ban him again after his DUI scandal.
3. SHINHWA Shin Hye Sung
Next, KBS also temporarily banned the public appearance of SHINHWA Shin Hye Sung. That is because not only was the artist driving under alcohol influence in October this year, but he also refused to take a breathalyzer test under the Road Traffic Act.
And as if the controversy was not enough, the media revealed that the car Shin Hye Sung used at the time was a reportedly stolen car.
4. Don Spike
Composer Don Spike or Kim Min Soo is among the next Korean artists banned by KBS due to drug scandals and controversies.
He had allegedly bought 45 million KRW worth of methamphetamine on 9 different occasions since December last year. The investigation found him to administer the drugs a total of 14 times, including the ones he did with a female receptionist.
Don Spike admitted to all the charges and was sentenced to 5 years in prison on December 20.
5. Ha Jung Woo
Actor Ha Jung Woo of Narco-Saints is also among KBS banned list of Korean artists due to his drug scandals and controversies.
The actor was found guilty of administering propofol illegally from January to September 2019 at a plastic surgery clinic in Gangnam, Seoul. The prosecution fined him 30 million KRW.
6. Singer B.I
Finally, singer B.I is also on the list of KBS banned Korean artists due to his previous drug scandals and controversies.
In April and May 2016, Singer B.I was found guilty of marijuana and LSD use and purchase. The South Korean court sentenced him 3 years in prison and 4 years of probation. Not only that, B.I also had to undergo 80 hours of community service, 40 hours of treatments and lectures for drug users, and an additional 1.5 million KRW fine.
