MBC “Tomorrow” Kdrama has suffered a HUGE blow on its ratings after the scandal involving BTS members’ name. Check out what REALLY happened and what lies behind the scandal of “Tomorrow” Kdrama.
“Tomorrow” Kdrama Gets Dragged into HUGE Scandal Involving BTS Members’ Name – Ratings Continues Plummeting
After rising to the top of most-talked Kdrama in April 2022, MBC “Tomorrow” kdrama suddenly gets dragged into a huge scandal that involves the name of BTS members. This scandal has angered some of BTS fans and resulted in the plummeting ratings of “Tomorrow” Kdrama.
On May 17, Korean media reported that MBC “Tomorrow” Kdrama ratings had continued dropping significantly due to the huge scandal involving BTS members’ name. Since the scandal first appeared in April 22, MBC “Tomorrow” Kdrama ratings decreased to half of its premiere. And even when MBC had released an official statement regarding the scandal, it still could not save the show.
What REALLY Happened?
So, what really happened to MBC “Tomorrow” kdrama that angered a lot of BTS fans and enthusiasts?
On April 22, “Tomorrow” kdrama released their Episode 7. In the episode, there was a character who wrote a list of names for “Death Registration”. It means that the list contains names of the deceased people who are about to enter the realm of the dead.
Unfortunately, when the camera zoomed in on the names involved in the MBC “Tomorrow” kdrama deceased list, there were two particular details stood out. These details were allegedly related to the name and birth date of BTS members.
The first emerging name was BTS V or Kim Tae Hyung, whose name appeared on the death list along with his birth date. On the third row of the list, we can see ‘Kim Tae Hyung’ written in hangul, with the same birth date of BTS V: December 30. The only difference is that the Kim Tae Hyung character on “Tomorrow” kdrama was born in 1971, while BTS V birth year is 1995.
Secondly, on the fourth row and second column of the list was another familiar birth date: 1997 / 9 / 1. Even though the name on the list read “Kim Yu Rim”, the familiar birthday was eerily similar to the birth date of BTS Jungkook, down to its month and year.
“Tomorrow” Kdrama Ratings Continues Plummeting
A few days after the details of the BTS name scandal in “Tomorrow” kdrama Episode 7 circulated on the internet, the MBC production ratings continued plummeting.
As of today, the total users who rated 1* keep on increasing for “Tomorrow” Kdrama reviews on IMDb and Google Review.
And not only that, cited by Wikipedia, Nielsen Korea even recorded that viewership ratings for “Tomorrow” Kdrama have dropped into half its premiere. From 7% of its premiere ratings, “Tomorrow” Kdrama now reaches 2 – 3% of viewership ratings only.
MBC Releases Official Statement Regarding the BTS Name Scandal
Following the constant decrease of its ratings, MBC released an official statement regarding the BTS name scandal in “Tomorrow” kdrama on May 17.
According to MBC, the appearance of BTS name and birthday mentioned in the scandal was purely a coincidence. Besides, MBC also stated that the numbers that appeared on the list was purely random and they did not have hidden intention behind them.
“The dates on the list were just a combination of numbers. There are no further intentions behind those numbers.”

What Lies Behind “Tomorrow” Kdrama Scandal Involving BTS Name
Now, you may be wondering what really lies behind this huge scandal involving BTS name and birthday in “Tomorrow” kdrama. What is really behind the strong reaction from BTS fans regarding the name scandal in “Tomorrow” Kdrama?
Death Superstitions
Firstly, South Korea is a country full of ancient superstitions accompanying their modern-day life even today. There is one particular superstition in South Korea that writing your name in red ink means that either the person has passed away or you are wishing harm or death upon the person if they’re still alive.
Indeed, while BTS members’ name and birthday mentioned in the scandal did not appear in red ink, they literally appeared on a list of the deceased. Therefore, it is no wonder that the list ignited a huge scandal for “Tomorrow” kdrama.
A Korean superstition states that if a living persons name is written in red ink then death or misfortune will befall them. There are two reasons: first, red is associated with death & second, when a person dies their name is written in red in family registers. #SuperstitionSat pic.twitter.com/IIqVnyabsZ

no bc whether you’re superstitious or not that shit they pulled with tomorrow is so dark-sided like… why they didn’t just make names up??? the people they chose to write down didn’t make an appearance in the show so clearly whoever was on that list mean nothing plot wise

MBC vs BTS
Secondly, apparently there has been an alleged long-time bad blood between MBC and BTS. In 2019, BTS was unable to attend MBC Gayo Daejaejeon because the date overlapped with BTS fixed schedule to attend Dick Clark’s Rockin Eve at Times Square, NY. Since then, MBC seems to have been offended by BTS and BIGHIT MUSIC that they caused BIGHIT artists to be alienated from their music shows, including GFriend and TXT.
As a result of the alienation, BIGHIT decided to fight back and conduct its family concert on the same day as MBC Gayo Daejaejeon in 2020. It means that all BIGHIT artists would not have been able to participate in MBC Gayo Daejaejeon 2020 even if MBC had invited them. This is why fans believe that the conflicts and bad blood between MBC and BTS are the leading cause of why MBC pulled this “Tomorrow” kdrama scandal involving BTS name.

If you have no idea about the beef between BTS & MBC then kindly stfu.
Tomorrow Kdrama wasn’t getting good ratings in korea & all was done to stir up ratings.
The ones who should apologise is the show runners not us https://t.co/6Q369P3lxB

“BH Family Concert on the same day as Gayo Daejaejeon? MBC made their bed, they lie on it”

Critic Park Junghwan on MBC-BH (op-ed):
BH announced in a press release that they’ll be holding a joint concert w/ their artists on 12/31. But it’s a little strange. It overlaps w/ MBC’s + pic.twitter.com/66EhKxu5dN
Fans Demand Apology from MBC Regarding the BTS Name Scandal
Finally, “Tomorrow” kdrama is a magnificent project that gives us so many life lessons. Regardless of whether what really happened to “Tomorrow” Kdrama is intentional from MBC, is it really worth making such risky decisions within this beautiful masterpiece?
Indeed, MBC has clarified the scandal of BTS name appearing on the death list in “Tomorrow” kdrama. However, fans still demand that the company apologize for the scandal.
If it’s not relevant to the plot (aka, the names are not mentioned out loud) it usually appears as “list of names” in the script and the prop producer then writes the names, when I worked as a prop producer I used this type of opportunity to put my own easter eggs in it +

Not a BTS fan at all but I still think this seems intentional and I think it's disgusting. It's just too many coincidences. I find it very hard to believe anyone in the entertainment business in S Korea doesn't know the names of BTS members so it's absurd to risk using any of their names in the first place. Coincidentally having the correct birthday? Okay 👍
