The 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards (MTV EMA) won’t occur this year. The event was supposed to be held in Paris on November 5. Initially, it will feature performers like BTS Jungkook, David Guetta, Anne-Marie, Manuel Turizo, Ozuna, Reneé Rapp, and Thirty Seconds to Mars. Instead, organizers say they look forward to hosting the MTV EMA again in November 2024.
2023 MTV EMA Paris Cancellation
The decision of 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards cancellation was announced on MTV EMA’s social media on the 20th due to current global tensions. The organizers prioritized the safety of employees, artists, fans, and everyone involved. They stated, “With the ongoing tragedy in Israel and Gaza, it’s not the time for worldwide festivities.”
Reuters reports that at least eight French airports faced security concerns, with some evacuated for checks. According to French aviation authorities, the airports affected include Toulouse, Biarritz, Pau, Nice, Lyon, Lille, Rennes, and Nannes. France is now on the highest state of alert after the murder of a schoolteacher on October 13.
The MTV EMAs are an annual celebration of global music. As we watch the devastating events in Israel and Gaza continue to unfold, this does not feel like a moment for a global celebration. With thousands of lives already lost, it is a moment of mourning.
