“KPop Demon Hunters 2” in 2029

“KPop Demon Hunters 2” is officially happening!

Netflix and Sony have officially confirmed “KPop Demon Hunters 2,” set to premiere in 2029. Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will return to continue the story of demon-hunting Kpop idols—Rumi, Mira, and Zoey.

The first movie, released on June 20, 2025, stayed in Netflix’s Top 10 for 15 straight weeks. That’s longer than any other English-language film on the platform.

During a press conference last August, director Maggie Kang shared, “We’ve set up so much backstory. There are still many questions left unanswered and worlds not yet explored.”

Waiting four years makes sense. Big animated movies take time to create. Think of “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” Quality like that doesn’t happen overnight.

The long gap until 2029 likely gives the creators and business players time to refine every detail:

  • Polish high-quality animation and visual effects
  • Explore the side story through short films of spin-offs
  • Expand global merchandise lines
  • Develop tie-ins like games or comics
  • Plan an even bigger global marketing rollout

Why “KPop Demon Hunters” Became a Global Hit?

In just 18 weeks, “KPop Demon Hunters” has smashed expectations with over 400 million views on Netflix.

But what made the first film resonate so deeply with audiences worldwide? This Netflix animated film found the perfect balance. It honored Korean culture but stayed fun and easy to follow for global audiences.

The three heroes—Rumi, Mira, and Zoey—carry real Korean history through their weapons.

  • Rumi’s “Four Tiger Sword” comes from Joseon-era shamanic rituals.
  • Mira’s curved blade is based on Goguryeo’s Cheolyeomchu weapon (37 BC–668 AD).
  • Zoey’s Spirit Knife reflects shaman tools used to fight evil spirits.

The movie also shows Korean folk art like Hojakdo, Irworobongdo, and hanok. Even the small details matter. The girls wear norigae, colorful pendants from the Joseon Dynasty, which are believed to bring good luck.

Their rivals, the boy band Saja Boys, wear outfits inspired by the jeoseung saja—the Korean grim reaper who guides souls. K-drama fans spotted that right away.

These design choices weren’t accidental. Kang shared that her main inspiration came from Korean shamanism. She said the first demon hunters were shamans whose tools evolved into performance weapons. The movie connects to Korea’s long history of women as spiritual leaders who held real power through rituals and performances.

The movie earned a 99% Rotten Tomatoes score and even passed “Squid Game” to become Netflix’s most-watched title.

Beyond the cultural authenticity, the film’s commercial performance exceeded all expectations. “KPop Demon Hunters” clicked with both Kpop fans and movie lovers. Real Kpop artists contributed to the choreography and sound, giving the film an authentic vibe. The strong female leads and creative storytelling made it stand out.

Kang wanted the film to be “as Korean as possible.” Audiences loved that. During its debut weekend, the Empire State Building glowed gold to celebrate its success in 41 countries.

The soundtrack became a hit on its own:

  • “Golden” by the fictional group HUNTR/X hit #1 on Billboard Hot 100.
  • The album reached #2 on the Billboard 200.
  • Eight songs entered the Hot 100 at once.
  • The album reached 1 billion Spotify streams.
  • The soundtrack earned five nominations at the Grammys.

Netflix capitalized on this momentum with an innovative distribution strategy. Netflix also tried something new—a theatrical run. The sing-along version earned around $20 million on its opening weekend (Aug 22–24). The Halloween re-release added another $5–6 million with over a thousand sold-out screenings.

KPop Demon Hunters’ merchandise exploded in popularity. Over 300 products were launched on the Netflix Shop. Collaborations with brands like Nongshim also contributed to this trend, as the products sold out within two minutes.

The film’s influence extended far beyond streaming numbers and retail sales. The cultural impact was huge. Fans wore costumes, hosted themed birthdays, and joined pop-up tours.

Kpop group TWICE recorded “Takedown” for the end credits and performed it live at Chicago’s Lollapalooza with a drone show. Even tennis legend Novak Djokovic danced to “Soda Pop” after winning the US Open.

From Business Deal to Global Phenomenon

Looking back, the film’s journey from acquisition to phenomenon reveals just how unpredictable success can be. Sony originally sold “KPop Demon Hunters” to Netflix in 2021 for only $20 million above production costs. Now, that deal looks like a bargain. The film could have made over $100 million in theaters alone.

Netflix’s response to the film’s explosive success moved with remarkable speed. By week 6, the streaming giant had begun planning a theatrical release. Two weeks later, they announced a sing-along edition. Week 10 saw the film hit theaters in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., New Zealand, and Australia, followed by the sing-along version arriving on streaming in week 11. Just four weeks after that, Netflix sealed the deal on the sequel.

The merchandising empire grew just as rapidly. Retail stores like Costco, Walmart, and H-Mart joined in, selling toys from Mattel and Hasbro. Fans even hosted KPop Demon Hunters-themed parties, showing how deep the fandom goes. In North America, Halloween costume charts were topped by the film’s characters.

Is the “KPop Demon Hunters” Sequel Worth the 4-Year Wait?

New Stories Coming: Short Film and Expanded Universe

So what can global fans expect from the sequel to “KPop Demon Hunters”? The 2029 release gives the team time to expand the Demon Hunters universe. A short film titled “Debut: A KPop Demon Hunters Story” is already in the works.

“We didn’t show the full backstory in the first movie,” Kang said during a press event in Seoul. When asked about the male character Jinu, she smiled, “You might think he’s gone, but who knows? Korean stories love a bit of tragedy.” Fans immediately began speculating.

How the First Film Built a 1.2 Billion-View Fanbase

The movie didn’t just talk about Kpop. And the film’s success wasn’t about the story. It was about authenticity and its message. Besides presenting Korean tradition and culture, the production cast real Kpop artists to voice the characters, like EJAE, Audrey Nuna, Rei Ami, and Kevin Woo (ex-U-KISS). This gave the movie real Kpop credibility that fans could feel.

The impact went viral. On TikTok, the hashtag #kpopdemonhunters exploded with 1.2 billion views, with fans creating their own covers and character cosplays. This wasn’t paid marketing—it was pure fan love. Viewers loved “KPop Demon Hunters” as it had Kpop energy, fantasy action, and powerful women—with no forced romance.

Five months in, and the hype is far from over. Since June, fans have kept the momentum alive through soundtrack streams, merch purchases, and themed events.

This isn’t a flash-in-the-pan success. It’s a cultural phenomenon with staying power. A four-year wait for the sequel? That’s nothing when the fandom shows this kind of dedication. If anything, the extended timeline gives the community more time to grow, not fade away.
