The highly anticipated new Korean historical drama “The Queen Who Crowns” (“Won Gyeong”), featuring the talented Cha Joo Young and Lee Hyun Wook, is set to premiere in 2025 and may be rated R for mature audiences.
New Historical Drama “The Queen Who Crowns” (“Won Gyeong”) to Premiere in 2025
On October 7, IZE’s exclusive report revealed that the new Korean drama “The Queen Who Crowns” (“Won Gyeong”) will air in January 2025. The series will premiere simultaneously on tvN and TVING on Mondays and Tuesdays.
“The Queen Who Crowns” (“Won Gyeong”) is a compelling Korean historical drama that follows Queen Wongyeong and her fiery journey to make her dream of creating a new world during the early Joseon Dynasty a reality.
This drama is a reunion project between director Kim Sang Ho and writer Lee Young Mi. Previously, they worked together on the drama series “Money Game” (2020). Through this upcoming historical drama, they will showcase their fantastic collaboration once again.
Director Kim Sang Ho is renowned for directing two riveting historical dramas: “Arang and the Magistrate” in 2012 and “Splendid Politics” in 2015. The upcoming drama will be his third historical project to helm. Meanwhile, for writer Lee Young Mi, this drama is her first project in the historical genre and marks only the second drama series she has penned.
“The Queen Who Crowns” (Won Gyeong”)
The plot centers on Queen Won Gyeong, a ‘kingmaker’ who dreams of a new world during the early Joseon period. She successfully secured the crown for her husband, Yi Bang-won, making him the third king. She also became “one of the founders of royal power” by rising to power alongside him.
Cha Joo Young from Netflix’s hit drama “The Glory” will portray the lead role of Queen Wongyeong. Lee Hyun Wook from “Song of the Bandits” will play the role of Lee Bang Wong/ King Tae Jong. In addition, Lee Sung Min from “Reborn Rich” will portray Lee Seong Gye / King Tae Jo.
Potential R Rated
The series features 12 episodes on both platforms; however, it will differ in some content details. tvN will show a TV version, while TVING will present an OTT version.
Furthermore, TVING will offer two exclusive prequel episodes of “Won Gyeong,” which will not be available on tvN. This separate release promises TVING subscribers with new stories and excitement that are unavailable in the main series.
Jang Kyung Ik, CEO of Studio Dragon, who attended the CJ Movie Forum on October 4 at the CGV Centrum City in Haeundae-gu, Busan, commented on “Won Gyeong,” saying:
“This is a work with 19+ elements. It will be edited to fit [the standards and audience of] tvN, while TVING will feature the R 19+ version.”

This statement highlights the distinction between the television and streaming versions of the series, which is important for Korean drama lovers of a wide range of ages to know.
Previously, the historical drama “Queen Woo,” released last August, caused a stir in the Korean drama world. The lack of initial rating information on the drama led to the release of an unedited version featuring adult content, which shocked the audience and quickly went viral on the internet.
However, with an intriguing storyline and an impressive cast lineup, this raises the question: are these steamy scenes really necessary? Moreover, after it went viral, the series is now available in both an R21+ version and a censored version.
Anticipation for Cha Joo Young and Lee Hyun Wook’s Chemistry
The upcoming drama will be Cha Joo Young’s first historical drama since her debut in 2016. The actress has showcased her acting skills in famous works, including “Chimera,” “Again My Life,” and “The Glory 1 & 2.”
In “The Glory Part 2,” she performed a jaw-dropping nude scene. With the potential for an R rating in the new drama, the question arises: will she deliver another hot scene in this production?
Furthermore, her stunning performances in previous dramas have left fans eager to see how she will bring the role of Queen Won Gyeong to life.
“The Queen Who Crowns” (“Won Gyeong”) will be Lee Hyun Wook’s second historical drama. Portraying Yi Bang Won, the third King Tae Jong, fans are eager to see his captivating performance again after his last historical drama, “Song of the Bandits.”
In addition, Kdrama fans are looking forward to the on-screen chemistry between Lee Hyun Wook and Cha Joo Young as a couple and as the King and Queen on their road to seizing power in the kingdom.
