Two Korean language-drama series, “Pachinko” and ‘Extraordinary Attorney Woo,’ have been nominated at the 2023 Critics Choice Awards for Best Foreign Language Series alongside seven other nominees from various countries.
“Pachinko” and “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” Are Nominated at the 2023 Critics Choice Awards for Best Foreign Language Series
On December 6, the Critics Choice Association (CCA) announced two Korean-language dramas, “Pachinko” and “Extraordinary Attorney Woo,” selected as the 28th Critics Choice Awards nominees in 2023.
Both dramas will compete with seven other series in the Best Foreign Language Series category: Netflix’s “1899” (Germany), Netflix’s “Borgen” (Denmark), HBO Max’s “Garcia!” (United States), MUBI’s “The Kingdom Exodus” (Denmark), Netflix’s “Kleo” (Germany), HBO’s “My Brilliant Friend” (Italy), and Apple TV+’s “Tehran” (Israel).
The 28th Annual Critics Choice Awards ceremony will take place at the Fairmont Century Plaza, Los Angeles, on Sunday, January 15, 2023.
Korean-language Drama and Movie in Critics Choice Awards
In 2021, the Korean language-movie “Minari” received ten nominations for the 2021 Critics Choice Awards. The movie won Best Foreign Language Film and Best Young Actor (Alan Kim).
In 2022, a Korean language-drama series which is also a global phenomenon, “Squid Game,” made history at the 27th Annual Critics Choice Awards. Netflix’s hit series took home two awards for Best Actor in the Dramas Series and Best Foreign Language Series.
In the 28th Critics Choice Awards, “Pachinko” and “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” will compete for the Best Foreign Language Series award. In total, nine drama series from various OTT and countries are in the category. With two Korean-language drama nominations, it marks the continued growth of the Korean wave in the international film industry.
“Pachinko” or “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” – Which One Will Be the Winner?
“Pachinko” is a novel-based drama with the same title by Min Jin Lee. The story follows a Korean immigrant family who left their homeland in a relentless struggle to live and flourish.
It is a multi-lingual drama as it has Korean, Japanese, and English. The series stars prominent Korean actors such as the academy winner who also cast in “Minari,” Youn Yuh Jung, and Lee Min Ho. Recently, the drama series successfully took home the Gotham Awards 2022 for Breakthrough Series for Long Format.
The legal Kdrama “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” follows the story of a young attorney Woo Young Woo who has Asperger syndrome. The ENA’s drama series, which is also available on Netflix, became the first most-watched Korean drama series this year.
According to Nielsen Korea, the final episode of the hit series achieved the highest viewership, 17.5 percent. In addition, the series cast, actress Park Eun Bin, was recently honored with the Rising Star Award for TV from the Critics Choice at the Celebration of Asian Pacific Cinema & Television in 2022.
