Apple TV+ produced Pachinko with the story based on the New York Times best-selling novel of the same name by Korean-American author Min Jin Lee. The drama series was created by Soo Hugh and directed by Kogonada and Justin Cho. Pachinko stars many Korean actors, such as the Academy Award-winning actress Youn Yuh Jung, Lee Min-Ho, Kim Min-ha, Jin Ha, and more.
The drama series is a multilingual drama with three languages; Korean, English, and Japanese. The story follows a Korean immigrant family’s hopes, dreams, and hardships over four generations as they leave their home country for safety and a better life in Japan and the United States.
Second Korean Language Drama Series and Fourth Korean Works to Win at Critics Choice Awards
The Critics Choice Awards has selected Pachinko as the Best Foreign Language Series winner at CCA 2023. Last year, the Netflix drama series secured the same award. Accordingly, Pachinko is the second Korean-language drama series to win in this category for two consecutive years. In addition, Pachinko also became the fourth Korean language work to win at Critics Choice Awards.
First, Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite. The black comedy thriller film won the Best Foreign Language Film Award and Best Director Award in 2020.
Second, Korean-American director Lee Isak Chung’s Minari. The family drama film won the Best Foreign Language Film Award and Best Young Actor Award in 2021.
And third, Netflix’s hit drama Squid Game. The series won the Best Actor in a Drama Series Award and Best Foreign Language Series Award in 2022.
Congratulations to the Pachinko cast and crew!
