Korean “Gangnam Style” sensation PSY has created another massive controversy with his annual concert, SUMMER SWAG 2024. And this time, 4 people have reportedly been hospitalized after the chaos. So, what really happened at PSY’s concert? Dive deep into the story with us below.
PSY SUMMER SWAG Concert 2024 in Chaos – 4 Hospitalized!
Over the last decade, PSY—birth name Park Jae Sang—has become one of the most iconic Korean soloists that has successfully brought Kpop to a global audience. And yet, that’s not the only thing PSY was famous for. For almost the same period, this singer-entrepreneur had also been famous for his large-scale summer concert, the SUMMER SWAG annual event.
While the show has been an incredibly highly-anticipated refreshing event, there’s always a story that follows this sensational concert. And this year’s no different. 78 people got sick, with 4 people reportedly being hospitalized after attending the PSY SUMMER SWAG 2024 concert, creating a massive controversy.
On July 7, Korean media outlet TenAsia reported a controversy happening at the PSY SUMMER SWAG concert 2024. The media revealed that 4 individuals had been transported from the venue at Gwangju World Cup Stadium to the hospital on the previous day.
According to TenAsia, the Gwangju Fire Department revealed that 78 spectators reported symptoms of heat-related illnesses and received on-site treatment. Yet, unfortunately, 4 of these spectators had also reported signs of exhaustion. Therefore, on-site treatments were insufficient, so they had to be transported to the hospital.
During this massive summer festival event on July 6, the perceived temperature in Gwangju was scorching on the very day, with the heat index reaching a sweltering 31.3 degrees Celsius (approximately 88.3 degrees Fahrenheit). Previously, a heatwave warning had been issued on July 5. And yet, it was downgraded to a heat advisory by 10 AM on the day of the concert.
The Controversy Continues – Will It Become Annual Incidents?
All in all, 2024 is definitely not the first time PSY has created a controversy with his SUMMER SWAG concert event. Previously, in June of last year, the same annual concert was also temporarily halted when an audience member showed symptoms of exhaustion.
Not only that, but the year before, in 2022, the PSY SUMMER SWAG concert had allegedly become the source of the increasing COVID-19 cases in South Korea. The singer—along with his company—must also face an official investigation due to the death at the event. And it was only one of many controversial cases caused by the summer concert.
Yet, this festival concert continues nonetheless. And so, does it mean that the controversy will become an annual incident in South Korea, then? What do you think? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
In the meantime, let’s check out PSY’s previous performance with BTS Suga at the SUMMER SWAG 2022.
