Now that the exclusive contract renewal between BLACKPINK members and YG Entertainment for their individual activities has resulted in a huge failure, Jennie Kim eventually revealed why she decided to establish her own company, ODDATELIER. So, what really happened behind Jennie’s brave decision? And does it have anything to do with YG Entertainment? Let us dive deeper into the origin of ODDATELIER and why Jennie decided to take this step.
Individual Contract Renewal Between BLACKPINK Members and YG Entertainment Has Been a Foreseen Failure
Just before 2023 ended last month, BLACKPINK’s founding agency, YG Entertainment, announced the failure of individual contract renewal with BLACKPINK members.
“We have renewed our agreement for BLACKPINK’s group activities and decided not to make separate deals for each member’s solo projects. However, we are fully committed to supporting the future ventures of BLACKPINK members and will wholeheartedly support their individual pursuits.”
YG Entertainment.
YG earlier reported that they had effectively renewed their contract with BLACKPINK as a group. They mentioned ongoing discussions about the members’ individual projects at that time. Yet, it turned out that the members chose not to re-sign with YG for their solo careers. Consequently, BLACKPINK is set to carry on in a unique format – united in their group identity while pursuing separate paths in their solo careers.
Jennie Kim decided to establish her own company called ODDATELIER. Meanwhile, Jisoo has joined hands with her brother in building BLISOO. Also, BLACKPINK’s most expensive member, Lisa, is still contemplating her next move. The only member who remains with YG is BLACKPINK’s vocalist, Rosé.
With the failure of BLACKPINK’s individual contract renewal with YG Entertainment, Jennie Kim finally sheds some light on her bold move.
The Primary Reason Why Jennie Kim Founded Her Own Company, ODDATELIER
After the announcement, Jennie made a guest appearance on Lee Hyori’s new talk show, “Lee Hyori’s Red Carpet.” During the show, she candidly discussed her reasons for choosing to embark on solo ventures beyond the scope of YG Entertainment with her sunbae.

According to Jennie, she wanted to maintain group activities with YG, honoring their seven-year collaboration. However, for her solo pursuits, she emphasized the need for more freedom and comfort.
Indeed, Jennie was extremely grateful for the valuable experiences and lessons she gained at YG Entertainment. However, she shared that her motivation to establish her own company stemmed from introspection about her future ambitions and what she truly wanted to achieve independently.
“I’ve always valued my seven-year journey with the company and wished to continue our group activities. However, I want more freedom and comfort in conducting my solo activities.
That’s why I cautiously set up my own company, OA, and plan to collaborate with my long-time crew. My goal is to engage in all my activities without constraints.
My time at YG taught me a lot, especially since I started as a trainee. I experienced and learned so much that I wondered, ‘What could I achieve on my own in the future?’ This led me to bravely embrace this new challenge.”
Jennie Kim.
After all, Jennie Kim’s company, ODDATELIER, stated on its website that the label plans to develop further as a creative space focused on developing unique and attention-grabbing ideas, diverging from the conventional and the expected.
Was BLACKPINK Contract Renewal Failure Because of YG Entertainment?
In like manners, with Jennie Kim opening up about her reason for starting her own company for solo projects, more questions arise: What really spurred Jennie’s bold move? And is YG Entertainment somehow involved in this?
From Jennie’s answers, many started to speculate that BLACKPINK’s contract renewal failure was indeed because of YG Entertainment.
Jennie said herself that she indeed wanted to honor her collaboration with YG as a BLACKPINK member. However, in terms of building and promoting her own brand as Jennie Kim and Jennie Ruby Jane, YG Entertainment has apparently set some limitations. These limitations have apparently prevented BLACKPINK members from exploring more challenges.
YG’s Massive Failure in Managing BLACKPINK
Not only that, over the last 7 years, YG Entertainment has shown a massive failure in managing BLACKPINK as a group. Despite being the #1 most influential girl group, BLACKPINK has very few discographies and comebacks. Over the last few years, they must put these limited discographies on repeat in every concert, racking their brains with how to make the same song feel different on every occasion.
Moreover, BLACKPINK also has very little chance of appearing in music shows. That is why, despite being one of the most prominent girl groups, they cannot keep up with the recent trend in the Kpop community. Fans even noticed that Jennie Kim once struggled to make a “cat heart” pose. And they believed it was because of her lack of appearance in music shows.

With this proven failure, fans are skeptical that YG Entertainment will be able to keep up with BLACKPINK’s individual promotions in the future. Hence, they praised Jennie Kim’s decision to establish her company, OA.
But what about you? Do you also believe that Jennie Kim has made the right decision in starting her own company? Or would she better stay with YG Entertainment? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
