Spoiler-free review of "The Manipulated" (2025)

“The Manipulated” (2025) is a South Korean thriller series based on the 2017 film “Fabricated City,” reuniting writer Oh Sang-ho and acclaimed actor Ji Chang-wook. This K-drama adapts the film’s core premise into a longer, more intense narrative about a man wrongfully imprisoned who fights to uncover the truth behind his framing. Though the setup may feel familiar, “The Manipulated” stands out thanks to its gripping performances, bold direction, and unflinching look at systemic corruption – let’s review this K-drama.

This review contains no spoilers — feel free to read on safely.

As Park Tae-joong, Ji Chang-wook delivers a powerful portrayal of an ordinary Good Samaritan whose life is destroyed after being accused of a crime he did not commit. A simple act of kindness becomes the catalyst for his downfall. His performance captures both vulnerability and relentless determination, reinforcing why he remains one of the strongest actors in the Korean entertainment industry.

Spoiler-Free Review: “The Manipulated,” A Brutal, Uncompromising Thriller

To start the review, let’s say “The Manipulated” is easily one of the darkest K-dramas in recent years. The series deals with torture, sexual assault, and psychological trauma—elements that make it challenging to watch and not suitable for sensitive viewers. Park Tae-joong’s suffering at the hands of a wealthy and ruthless antagonist. Meanwhile, An Yohan (played chillingly by Do Kyung-soo) forms the emotional core of the story.

Directors Park Shin-woo and Kim Changu lean fully into the brutality of the narrative. Fans of action-heavy K-dramas will appreciate the high-speed car chases, intense fight choreography, and dynamic camerawork. Ji Chang-wook’s own stunt work further elevates the authenticity and adrenaline of each action sequence.

A Satisfying Yet Slightly Rushed Ending

While the drama maintains strong momentum throughout, the ending feels somewhat rushed. The resolution is wrapped up neatly compared to the show’s otherwise intricate tension. Still, the open-ended conclusion leaves room for a potential second season—something viewers may welcome after such an immersive ride.

Final Verdict

The Manipulated is a raw, compelling K-drama that blends emotional depth with hard-hitting action. Despite its heavy themes, it delivers a rewarding and memorable viewing experience led by a standout performance from Ji Chang-wook.

⭐ Rating: 8/10
