On August 6, online media buzzed with discussions about the commotion on the Seoul Subway Line 9 train. Regrettably, the discussion about Seoul subway stir implicated the Kpop sensation BTS, and their fans, ARMY. What exactly happened, and why were BTS and ARMY implicated?
A Strange Smell caused the Subway Commotion
As reported by SBS, the commotion was caused by a ‘gas smell’ inside the Seoul Subway Line 9 train. The police and fire authorities received a report from a passenger on an express train of Line 9 heading towards Gimpo Airport station.
“There is a strange smell. People are running around and falling.”
Passenger’s report.
When the train reached Sinnonhyeon station, 7 passengers reportedly sustained injuries and bruises in their haste to exit the train.
Simultaneously, the police received another report that there was a “rowdy person inside the station.”
Why BTS and ARMY Are Involved?
Around the same time as the ‘gas smell’ report received by the police and fire authorities, there were screams. From the report, some media assumed that the “rowdy person inside the station” was the loud BTS fans on the Seoul subway.
Sadly, when the report surfaced on SNS, it caused another problem.
“It’s not a knife attack or biochemical terrorism at Sinnonhyeon Station, so please don’t create a panic atmosphere with false information anymore.
Foreigners near me screamed while watching the video. Given the crowded subway, people misunderstood and panicked.
I also made a police statement.
Of course, everyone, take care and take off your earphones.
Take care of yourself”

Online forums got busy discussing the commotion and found that the screams came from BTS ARMY fans returning home after attending SUGA’s concert at the KSPO Dome and watching his live stream. The fans’ sudden outbursts and reactions were due to SUGA’s “7” friendship tattoo on his shoulder.
Yet, after thoroughly searching the train and its vicinity, the police found no evidence corroborating the claim.
ARMY Got Hate Comments and Threats
With the debate spread online, hate comments and threats came to the allegedly BTS ARMY who shared the video. The person even posted an explanation of what had actually happened.
