What Really Happened?
“Reborn Rich” Korean drama starring Song Joong Ki premiered on November 18 and immediately gained massive attention from both regional and global fans.
Unfortunately, during this episode, some disturbing scenes had misinterpreted and brought false representations of one of the world’s most famous travel destinations: the city of Istanbul.
Istanbul is one of the largest cities in Turkey, famous for its richness in culture and travel destinations. The city is the perfect melting place for Western European culture, beautifully mixed with eastern culture from Asia.
Due to the many, MANY empires that ruled the place, Istanbul possesses an exotic beauty and wealth of cultural differences that no other cities or countries could ever offer.
But what had the “Reborn Rich” production team done to Istanbul? They had turned the gorgeous city into a horrible and scary place, full of dangerous crimes and people.
All The False Representation Issues and Controversy in Song Joong Ki New Drama, “Reborn Rich”
In Episode 1, “Reborn Rich” new drama starring Song Joong Ki portrayed Istanbul with a false interpretation that is far different from what the city truly is. And here are some of the details in the disrespectful issues and controversy “Reborn Rich” production team did to Istanbul.
1. The ‘Middle-East Yellow Filter & Music’
First and foremost, what made fans incredibly angry with Song Joong Ki new drama, “Reborn Rich” is how the production team had portrayed the city using the stereotypical yellow ‘middle east filter’.
This filter commonly appears in action movies when presenting countries from the middle-east part of Asia. And most of the time, this filter appears during battle-related scenes like war issues or chasing a suspected crime lord in alleys of middle-east countries.
The production team then combined the yellow filter with some iconic music. And fans believe that the use of this combination has created a false representation and provided a negative connotation of the beautiful city of Istanbul.
2. The Scary-Looking Side Characters
In addition to the above misleading combination, Song Joong Ki new drama, “Reborn Rich” had disrespected not only the city, but also the people.
During the Istanbul scenes, “Reborn Rich” Korean drama displayed some side characters that are scary looking and unhospitable. This further adds to the false representation of the people of Istanbul, who are famous for their hospitality and being one of the most sociable communities in the world.
4. Portraying an Unsafe & Underdeveloped City of Organized Crime
What is worse is that during the scenes in Istanbul, “Reborn Rich” new drama starring Song Joong Ki created issues and controversy by portraying the city as an unsafe and underdeveloped city that is full of organized crimes.
Not only that, there was even a scene where Song Joong Ki’s character became a victim of terrible humiliation. And the drama even showed that the perpetrators of this horrible humiliation were, in fact, children.
This portrayal created a false portrayal that Istanbul is a city with an unsafe environment and disrespectful young generations.

This is NOT The First Time!
At last, fans are furious about Istanbul’s false portrayal issues and controversy in “Reborn Rich” because it is NOT the first time Korean drama disrespects other cultures and countries.
Previously, “Racket Boys” disrespected Indonesia by constantly mocking the country during a badminton competition. Then, “Twenty Five Twenty One” created a scene where the female lead laughed while showing the horrible tragedy of 9/11 in the US. Next, Korean drama production teams also insulted Thai food in “Big Mouth”, while Netflix Vietnam even went as far as blocking “Little Women” after horrible insults.
@wie0wq You should apologize, you have done a lot wrong to a country that saved you by making Istanbul look bad in this way. #rebornrich#istanbulturkey#viraltiktok#koreandramas#rebornrich2022#editsss#fypシ ♬ Love You So – The King Khan & BBQ Show
The premise that Korean dramas have constantly been insulting other cultures and nations is now getting stronger. Therefore, South Korean production teams must make a crucial move to repair the viewers’ mistrusts. And they must work harder in their initial research before involving someone else’s cultures and countries.
