How disappointed were you when you found out that “Squid Game” Season 2 had failed to come out as a winner at the 2025 Golden Globes? Despite the early nominations and the massive hype, the second season of this Korean sensational series has failed to secure one of the most prestigious awards in the film industry. And yet, did you know? This unexpected failure had been predicted by the series creator, Hwang Dong Hyuk. How? Dive deeper into what the director said in the report below.
“Squid Game” Season 2 Failed as Golden Globes 2025 Winner Despite Early Nominations
Seems like it was just yesterday that “Squid Game” Season 2 shocked the whole filming industry after being nominated early at the 2025 Golden Globes, even though the series has yet to hit Netflix. And yet, despite this thrilling early nomination, “Squid Game” Season 2 had failed to secure the award.
Last year, on December 9 (local time), the Golden Globes announced that “Squid Game” Season 2 was nominated for “Best Television Series – Drama” at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, scheduled for January 5, 2025. At the time, it created a massive buzz in both the Korean and international entertainment industries. The panels of judges had received early screeners of “Squid Game” Season 2 and believed that this project was worthy of the nomination.
Indeed, it is such a rare occasion that a project can be nominated for such a prestigious title even before it’s officially released. After all, the Golden Globes is considered one of the most prestigious awards ceremonies in film and television, alongside the Academy Awards (Oscars), the SAG Awards, and the Critics’ Choice Awards.
And yet, when the awards announced that the winner was “Shōgun” instead of “Squid Game” Season 2, fans became immediately disappointed.
It was All Under Calculated Prediction
However, please don’t lose your heart just yet. Apparently, this so-called Season 2 failure at this year’s Golden Globes had been under a calculated prediction by the “Squid Game” creator Hwang Dong Hyuk.
During the interview conducted prior to the awards ceremony, Hwang Dong Hyuk explained that since Season 2 is only the first half of the whole story, he didn’t expect much. After all, it takes a perfectly clear and carried-out message for a series to win such a prestigious award.
“Honestly, I wrote it all in one continuous narrative. But then, we split it into Season 2 and Season 3. So, I had given up on any awards consideration for Season 2. That’s because the story isn’t completed yet, and the full message I want to convey hasn’t been revealed.
To win an award at a ceremony like that, what you’re trying to say has to be perfectly delivered. Since I knew it wouldn’t come across in a split format, I thought, ‘It’ll be tough to win if we divide it up like this,’ and I didn’t have any expectations for it.”

Not A Failure!
Therefore, although “Squid Game” Season 2 did not come out as a winner this year, it was definitely not a failure. In fact, it had been intentionally designed that way.
Season 2 was only the first half—a prelude to what has been planned as the epic conclusion to the whole series later in Season 3. Therefore, Hwang Dong Hyuk believed securing a Golden Globes nomination had truly been an unexpected honor for what he believed to be a prologue to the “Squid Game” finale.
“Just the fact that it was nominated before release really shocked and surprised me. And making it into the top six nominations alone felt like a big enough achievement, so I felt as though we already won something.
I was so happy and grateful that we had an opportunity to go to this award. Personally, I didn’t have high expectations for winning. If we’re going to really aim for an award, I think it might be with Season 3, when the story I want to tell reaches its conclusion.”
