On August 18th, the Directors Guild of Korea (DGK) announced ten Korean films that passed the Bechdel Test for 2021 “Bechdel Choice 10” to promote gender equality.

What is Bechdel Test?
“Bechdel Choice” comes from Bechdel Test, also known as the Bechdel-Wallace Test, created by American cartoonist Alison Bechdel in 1985. It becomes famous for measuring the appropriate representation of women in fiction, including in books and films.
Bechdel Test criteria.
There are three criteria of the Bechdel Test in fiction:
- Feature at least two female leads.
- The female leads must talk to each other.
- Both female leads must have a subject of conversation about something besides a man.
In addition, the DGK added new conditions to the evaluation of the films that are still in line with current requirements. The new conditions are: a woman must be one of the creators behind the scenes. She can be the filmmaker, producer, scriptwriter, or camera director.
Moreover, the film must include a female protagonist or appear as the main lead in the same proportion as the other male leads. Furthermore, the female characters should not be stereotyped and should not be opposed to any social group.
The Judges of “Bechdel Choice 10.”
“Bechdel Choice 10” is a part of the DGK’s annual film festival, “Bechdel Day 2021,” which will take place on September 4th. The judges at the event are filmmakers Kim Dong-ryeong, Shin Ah-ga, Jo Won-hee, actor Bong Tae-gyu, PGK CEO Choi Jung-hwa, KwonKim Hyun-young (women’s studies scholar), Ham Yeon-son (film critic), and Lee Dong-ha (producer) and Lee Bo-ram (screenwriter).
