Director Ahn Gil Ho Faces School Bullying Scandal Amidst THE GLORY Part 2 Release
Just a while after Netflix The Glory Part 2 release, the internet and social media went frenzy because of The Glory director Ahn Gil Ho.
On the same day of The Glory Part 2 release, Korean media Dailian appeared with an exclusive report on The Glory director Ahn Gil Ho and his school bullying scandal.
According to the official report, an alleged victim posted an extended testimony on an online community titled: ‘The Glory Drama PD Bullying Perpetrator’. In the testimony, alleged victim A stated they only recently learned that Ahn Gil Ho had become a director since he did not really watch Korean dramas.
However, once he learned that Ahn Gil Ho led a prominent Korean drama that is supposed to raise an awareness about school bullying and violence, alleged victim A believed it was ironic, absurd, and unforgivable since Ahn Gil Ho was a school bullying perpetrator himself.
“I don’t watch Korean dramas, so I didn’t know Ahn Gil Ho was an active PD. After The Glory drama became a hot topic, I only learned about it through a group chat with my Filipino school alums.
I don’t want to make an issue about whether Ahn Gil Ho is living well. However, it was truly absurd and unforgivable that a perpetrator of school violence would lead a program that was supposed to raise awareness about school bullying, like The Glory. That is why I decided to make the story public.”

What Really Happened?
According to the testimony, The Glory director Ahn Gil Ho committed school bullying violence in 1996. The incident happened when Ahn Gil Ho was in his third year at a local high school in the Philippines, while the alleged victim A was in his second year at an international middle school.
The incident began when high-school student Ahn Gil Ho was dating female middle schooler B. At the time, alleged victim A and his friend made fun of B and teased her.
Due to their teasing, Ahn Gil Ho became angry and ordered some students at the international school to drag A and his friend to assault them. Alleged victim A claimed that about 10 older students, Ahn Gil Ho included, beat A and his friend when they did not answer their questions.
“They started beating and threatening us when we didn’t answer who had made fun of his girlfriend, B. They also said they would bring a knife and stab us. Then, they would continue beating us for about two hours.
I know there have been many cases where whistleblowers would suffer the aftermath considering the school bullying and violence issue in the entertainment industry. It is not a problem for me as I am not living in South Korea today. But I am deeply worried about my friends who are in South Korea right now.
Once they asked me: ‘can’t you at least do that much?’, I decided to reveal this story.”

The School Bullying Issue Escalated
Further in the testimony, alleged victim A also stated that the concept of extreme senior-junior relationships in South Korea was not familiar there since most of the same-grade students were childhood friends who had grown up together.
It was only after their incident that everything began to change in their school.
“After the incident, Ahn Gil Ho frequently instructed our senior students to beat the male students in our grade.
It was horrible since they used to be the older brothers with whom we had grown up together since we were little.
But after it happened, these older brothers began beating us for not giving them the right manners. Some of my friends would even get beaten up for hot greeting them properly.”

Alleged victim A is now living in the United States. However, he stated in the testimony that if The Glory director Ahn Gil Ho denied the allegations, some friends who were also victims at the time were ready to testify together with him. And if Ahn Gil Ho decides to press charges, they will also actively respond to the lawsuit.
“All we want is the realization of justice. Isn’t it obvious that people shouldn’t have done something like this? It’s too disgusting.”

Mixed Criticisms
After the school bullying scandal went viral following The Glory Part 2 release, director Ahn Gil Ho received mixed reactions from South Korean netizens.
While most responses criticized Ahn Gil Ho for the school violence, others believe what he did was not ‘bullying’. Some netizens claimed that Ahn Gil Ho was defending his girlfriend at the time. Therefore, it was different from bullying.
At the same time, other netizens even pointed out that it was A who had actually bullied Ahn Gil Ho’s girlfriend. That is why it was only right for Ahn Gil Ho to defend her.
Still, no matter the case, violence of ANY kind is never the right solution to any problem. So, if the story were true, both sides were at fault.
- He was only fighting back for his girlfriend because A picked on him. So, I don’t know if that’s bullying.
- Isn’t it ironic?
- Bullying is something you’ve done constantly. This case sounds like a one-time event; he did it because the guy made fun of his girlfriend.
- An alleged bully leading a drama about bullying? What a perfect man for the job!
- Is this bullying, though? Bullying is when someone picks on you, giving you a hard time for no reason in a lengthy period of time. But this case was to teach a lesson to the people who had made fun of his girlfriend.
- What strange comments! It is already weird that a high school student dated a middle school student, and for middle school students to tease a girl. But having 15 high school seniors beating 2 middle school students who are 5 years younger?
School Bullying Scandal Amidst THE GLORY Part 2 Release: Netflix and Director Ahn Gil Ho Official Statements
Finally, responding to the school bullying and violence accusation, The Glory director Ahn Gil Ho admitted to Yonhap News that he studied abroad in the Philippines for approximately a year. However, The Glory director claimed that no school bullying or violence happened then.

And now that the school bullying issue is threatening the hype of The Glory Part 2 release, the Studio Dragon production team claimed that they were checking all the facts while trying to understand the situation.
After all, Netflix The Glory Part 2 is only recently released and has received impressive evaluations in topical and artistic quality. However, if the allegations are true, The Glory must be reevaluated due to the director’s school bullying allegations.
