New Korean drama starring Jung Ryeo Won and Wi Ha Joon, “The Midnight Romance in Hagwon,” must face an expected DUI controversy. Considering the high anticipation and excellent chemistry between the main actors, this seemingly subtle issue has brought massive disappointment from fans. So, what happened to this new Korean drama? What does DUI have to do with it? Dive deep into the issue with us.
“The Midnight Romance in Hagwon” Faces Unexpected DUI Controversy – What Happened?
Jung Ryeo Won and Wi Ha Joon are currently starring in a new heart-fluttering Korean drama, “The Midnight Romance in Hagwon” (also known as “Graduation”). And yet, although this new series has built massive anticipation long before the first episode, it immediately faces unexpected DUI controversy once it airs.
On May 20, Korean media outlet OSEN reported that “The Midnight Romance in Hagwon” had faced a controversy due to an “inappropriate” scene. The report further elaborated that the scene in reference includes DUI (Driving Under the Influence), commonly known as drunk driving.
Previously, in Episode 4 of “The Midnight Romance in Hagwon,” there was a scene where the academy tutor, Seo Hye Jin (Jung Ryeo Won), was drinking with her colleague Nam Cheong Mi (Seo Ju Yeon).
In the scene, Seo Hye Jin arrives late to the meeting and immediately fills her glass with soju. Then, she drank repeatedly while seemingly in distress, listening to her friend’s provocative words. It was clear that Seo Hye Jin started to become more than just tipsy after drinking those soju shots in desperation.
And yet, the issue began after the scene.
After her drinking scene with Cheong Mi, Seo Hye Jin returned to the academy and practiced the joint lecture with Lee Jun Ho (Wi Ha Joon). Surprisingly, after finishing this practice, the next scene of “The Midnight Romance in Hagwon” new Korean drama showed Seo Hye Jin driving her car to take Lee Jun Ho home. This scene is particularly shocking, knowing that the female tutor had just had a drinking session a few hours earlier.
A Bigger Issue for the New Korean Drama
Some fans may think it’s not a big deal since there was a small break between the drinking and driving scenes. However, the DUI controversy is currently under the spotlight in South Korea following singer Kim Ho Joong’s drinking and driving scandal.
According to OSEN, South Korean viewers have been expressing discomfort in many Korean online communities. They criticized the scene for failing to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving and for promoting the wrong behavior on a platform that influences viewers.
As a result, criticism began pouring in for this new Korean drama by writer Park Kyung Hwa and director Ahn Pan Seok. Korean viewers believe that the production team had made a careless mistake, resulting in this DUI controversy for “The Midnight Romance in Hagwon” drama.
- “Ahn Pan-seok is a veteran in this industry, and he’s still making mistakes like this??”
- “I was so surprised when I saw this!”
- “How could someone mess up so badly…”
- “Are we stuck in the past? This feels like a scene from the 90s.”
- “Oh no, what are they going to do about this?”
- “I didn’t even notice it when I was watching.”
- “Oh dear, they really slipped up.”
- “Wow, this is definitely an editing error.”
- “Did they not notice this while filming?”
- “Oh my gosh, they probably missed it during editing.”
Still, what do you think about this issue? Was the scene in “The Midnight Romance in Hagwon” drama worth raising as DUI controversy? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
