The Dark Storyline of “The Sound of Magic”
“The Sound of Magic” storyline focuses on teenage lives and the parents-children relationship. The three main characters face a critical phase of their lives. From the story of the three main characters in “The Sound of Magic,” there are lessons we can learn.
Yoon Ah Yi (Choi Sung Eun), a teenage girl who lives with only her sister, has to juggle working part-time and studying. She desperately wants her mom and dad to go home and live with them. But unfortunately, the hard life has made Ah Yi lose her dream.

The mysterious good-looking magician in “The Sound of Magic”, Ri Eul (Ji Chang Wook), suddenly appears in front of Ah Yi. He seems to be the help sent to give strength to her. Il Deung joins the “performance” and finds such guidance for his life out of curiosity. In fact, Ri Eul himself has faced difficulties in his teenage times.
Lessons and Quotes for Parents and Children from “The Sound of Magic”
Be there for your kids
The absence of Ah Yi’s mom and dad has given so much burden to Ah Yi. Ergo, she doesn’t dare to dream. On the other hand, Il Deung’s parents seem to be there for him. However, their presence is just a physical one, not emotionally.
Listen to each other
Parents often feel that their children have to listen to them all the time. However, it’s necessary to listen to each other.
“You think and think and think only inside your own mind, and never let it out. No wonder your heart gets heavier and heavier.”
Ri Eul, “The Sound of Magic”
Overcontrolling will never be good
Ah Yi is controlled by other adults in her life: the landlady, teacher, convenience store owner. So, she wants to skip time and be an adult soon.
On the other hand, Il Deung’s parents overcontrol him. He is forced to study hard and be a successful lawyer just like his father.
Dreams can’t be forced
We all have dreams. However, the dreams are different from one to another. Il Deung’s parents force their dream on their son. Meanwhile, Ah Yi feels that the dreams has to meet the standard of society.
“Since when did this world become a place where even dreams have to meet a standard?”
Yoon Ah Yi, “The Sound of Magic”
Happiness is within us
So, what is happiness? It’s something within us. We create the happiness.
“If I succeed, will I be happy?”
Na Il Deung, “The Sound of Magic”
Show your love
In some family, it is still rare to show and express their love to each other. Though, there is nothing wrong for parents to say “I love you” to the children, and vice versa, isn’t it?
Believe in yourself
Last but not least, we can interpret the question “do you believe in magic?” as “do you believe in yourself?” By believing in yourself, you can make anything happen.
“Magic doesn’t create miracles but allows you to discover them.”
Yoon Ah Yi
“The Sound of Magic” Season 2
With the lessons taught by the characters from “The Sound of Magic,” do you think they deserve a happy life?
Most viewers are disappointed with the dissapearance of Ri Eul. Viewers expect Ri Eul to return before the final curtain. But unfortunately, he does not. Instead, he disappears into an unknown place. Even Ah Yi, who finally becomes a magician herself, doesn’t know where Ri Eul is.
“What happened to Ri Eul?” is the question on everyone’s lips. Ri Eul seems to successfully teach Ah Yi how to perform magic and make him disappear. With such an ending, we can’t blame the viewers for hoping for “The Sound of Magic” season 2. There are lots of predictions on the storyline for season 2.
In “The Sound of Magic” season 2, Ri Eul will probably return as a successful magician and rebuild the amusement park. Meanwhile, whether Ah Yi will meet her mother is still a big question.
In the last episode, Na Il Deung decides to take the rough road by dropping out of school. It seems that Il Deung will grow away from his parents’ expectations. However, whether Il Deung will swim or sink waits for us in season 2.
