The UNEXPECTED Meaning
Following the release of BTS j-hope “Jack In The Box” and “MORE” concept photos and videos, fans begin realizing the UNEXPECTED meaning behind all the eerie visuals.
Previously, we discussed how the original concept of “Jack In The Box” started from the idea of jack-in-the-box toys. While the basic idea indeed reflects the iconic toys, there is a thrilling meaning behind the story of “Jack In The Box”.
According to Wikipedia, “Jack In The Box” started as the folklore of a high-ranking priest from the 14th century, Sir John Schorne. In the story, he cast the devil into a boot to protect North Marston village in Buckinghamshire.
This folklore is the reason why Sir John Schorne is often pictured carrying a boot with a devil, and also why the French call “Jack In The Box” by “diable en boîte”, which literally translates to “devil in a box”.
BTS j-hope Version of “Jack In The Box” in His Solo Album
So, how does the eerie folklore relate to BTS j-hope version of “Jack In The Box” solo album and its concept photos?
By connecting all the references, fans begin understanding the unexpected hidden messages BTS j-hope wanted to convey in his upcoming solo album, “Jack In The Box”.
If you pay close attention, j-hope “Jack In The Box” solo album logo starts with the boot symbol in the “J”. Fans believe that it may represent the “J” in j-hope and the boot used to seal the devil. However, instead of sealing the devil within the boot, this time, j-hope plans to unleash all the darkness hidden inside him.
As we all know, j-hope has always been the ray of sunshine and a source of happiness and positivity among BTS members and ARMY. While this has been going on for years, j-hope believes that it’s time for him to reveal and embrace what’s behind his warm appearance.
Previously in a Weverse interview, j-hope confessed that he wanted to show an opposite side of his current image. Instead of delivering bright and warm light, j-hope wants to embrace his dark and raw side of him.
“As you know, I often present myself with a sunny demeanor. So I have a strong desire to display a different side of me. So I challenged myself to do that in my current projects. I wanted to show an extremely dark, raw side.”

The REAL Reason Behind j-hope Changing His Image
So, why did j-hope decide to change his image? Did he feel pressured, or was he not satisfied with his current image? Or was it not his original persona in the first place?
Not at all. In fact, BTS j-hope revealed further in his Weverse Magazine interview that he wanted to embrace his darker side to better convey all the messages he wanted to share with his fans.
BTS j-hope believed there were more stories and messages he wanted to tell and share with his fans. However, if he stayed the same way he did, it would all become limited, and he wouldn’t be able to carry all the messages well.
That is why j-hope decided to try coming out of his comfortable box. He crossed the boundaries, embraced all the darkness inside him, and unleashed them all.
“In my time working and living, I figured out the stories I can tell are extremely limited when I only use my natural style or how people see me.
j-hope in Weverse Magazine.
I have things I want to say, but I kept feeling like they wouldn’t come across well if I did them in the same style I always have.
If I was going to convey the things I wanted to say, I would have to be darker.
It’s something I’ve never done before, so I was excited to try something new. I was heavily influenced by what my heart was telling me, and that’s why I decided to give it a try.”
