Korean dramas have become the world’s most favorite serials due to the complexity of their plots and conflicts, even for the second lead couples. However, while the public’s attention focused so much on the main characters, there are several Korean dramas with extremely enticing second lead couples that MUCH deserve a HAPPY ending.
CAUTION: This article contains SPOILERS!
What is the Second Lead Couple in KDramas?
Loyal fans of Korean dramas will no longer feel awkward with the term second-lead couples. However, let us enlighten those who are still new to this wonderful hobby.
In Korean dramas, we usually have the terms male lead and female lead. These two form a couple that becomes the main focus of the entire series, especially in the romance genre. In the drama, the plot, storyline, and conflict revolve around these two. That is why the series will no longer exist without them. Therefore, we call them the Lead Couple.
So, what is the second lead couples in Korean dramas? It’s the second couple you see in most romance Korean dramas, whose existence is still essential to the plot, but the world does NOT revolve around them. The most famous second lead couple is Seo Dae Young and Yoon Myeong Ju in “Descendants of the Sun”. They have a love story that was considered even more appealing than the lead couple.
However, despite having unbearably touching stories, not every second lead couple is as fortunate as Sergeant Seo and Lieutenant Yoon. In fact, some following second lead couples in Korean dramas truly need the HAPPY ending they all deserve.
Second Lead Couples in Korean Dramas who Deserve a HAPPY Ending
1. Wang Eun and Park Soon Duk from “Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo” – played by EXO Baekhyun and Z.Hera
While most Kdrama fans consider Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo one of the most unforgettable historical dramas, it has highly unfair treatment for most of its couples, especially Wang Eun and Park Soon Duk.
Park Soon Duk is the daughter of Grand General Park Soo Kyung. Unlike other aggashi in the era, her father raised her as an excellent fighter and hunter. All her life, Park Soon Duk has always been in love with the 10th Prince Wang Eun. However, due to her “unusual” upbringing, Wang Eun doesn’t return her feelings, even when their families ordered them to marry.
However, approaching the middle of the series, Prince Wang Eun started showing his interest in Soon Duk. He fell in love with Soon Duk, and they became real husband and wife. But one day, their house was raided by Wang Yo’s army, and Soon Duk died protecting her husband. After that, Prince Wang Eun was killed by his own brother, Wang Yo.
This unfair death makes Wang Eun and Soon Duk one of the second lead couples in Korean dramas who truly deserve a happy ending.
2. Seo Dan and Gu Seung Joon from “Crash Landing on You” – played by Seo Ji Hye and Kim Jung Hyun
The second we truly believe to deserve a happy ending out of all second couples in Korean dramas is Seo Dan and Gu Seung Joon from “Crash Landing on You”.
Starting off her appearance in the drama as Ri Jeong Hyeok’s fiancée, Seo Dan had to give up her wedding plan because her fiancée had fallen in love with a South Korean woman. Even though she initially did not give up just yet, Seo Dan ended up brokenhearted, and the one staying by her side was Gu Seung Joon.
Gu Seung Joon is a con artist who escapes from Yoon Se Ri’s brother to North Korea. He helped Yoon Se Ri because he wanted to get her attention to avenge his father. However, he falls in love with the firm and stubborn Seo Dan in the end.
While these two characters are in love with each other, Seo Dan ends up saying goodbye forever to her beloved, approaching the end of the series. Unfortunately, Gu Seung Joon was killed just when they started getting closer to each other.
And that is why these two are among the second lead couples in Korean dramas who deserve a HAPPY ending.
3. Moo Yeon and Kim So Hye from “100 Days My Prince” – played by Kim Jae Young and Han So Hee
Being one of Han So Hee’s masterpieces, no words can explain how much Crown Princess Kim So Hye deserve a happy ending with her beloved Moo Yeon as one of the most tragic second lead couples in Korean dramas.
Born into a twisted family, Kim So Hye had to follow her father’s order to become the Crown Princess even though she doesn’t love the Crown Prince. Meanwhile, Moo Yeon is So Hye’s father’s right-hand man who does all the dirty work for him, including killing innocent people. As time goes by, the two get closer to each other that Kim So Hye becomes pregnant with Moo Yeon’s child.
After all the problems get resolved, Kim So Hye and Moo Yeon got a chance to escape and be together. However, on their way to escape, So Hye’s father’s soldiers chased them. As a result, Moo Yeon ended up died protecting Kim So Hye.
Don’t you think that these two deserve their own happy ending, Kdrama fans?
4. Seo Dan Ah and Lee Yeong Hwa from “Run On” – played by Sooyoung and Kang Tae Oh
They said what hurts more than proper separation is being so close to each other without the possibility of being together. And that is exactly what happens with Seo Dan Ah and Lee Yeong Hwa, the second lead couple in “Run On” Korean drama.
Born as the only legitimate daughter of a chaebol family, Seo Dan Ah had to endure discrimination from her patriarchal father. That is why even when she was born as the first and only legitimate child of the family, she had to change her birth date so the second son—born from a mistress—could become the first. Seo Dan Ah is a strong, intelligent woman with a successful business who gives you that dominant female character vibe.
Due to her high taste in arts, Seo Dan Ah was captivated by a painting done by a college student named Lee Yeong Hwa. The two became attracted and developed feelings for each other. Indeed, Yeong Hwa’s cheerful and childlike personality seemed to complete Dan Ah’s stubbornness and lack of empathy.
However, at the end of the day, due to their different background and Dan Ah’s obligation as the family’s inheritor, they decided to separate.
5. Kim Moo Jin and Do Hae Soo from “Flower of Evil” – played by Seo Hyun Woo and Jang Hee Jin
As the daughter of a serial killer and an older sister of a murder suspect, Do Hae Soo’s personality changed from a ray of sunshine into gloomy darkness. Do Hae Soo and Kim Moo Jin were once a couple when they were teenagers, but Kim Moo Jin left her when they all found out that Hae Soo’s father was a serial killer.
18 years later, Do Hae Soo and Kim Moo Jin find each other once again. This time, Kim Moo Jin vowed to stand by Do He Soo’s side no matter what happens. However, Do Hae Soo turned out to be the one who killed the village foreman due to self-defense. After being released, Do Hae Soo decided to study abroad, leaving Kim Moo Jin to start her life anew, even when they still have feelings for each other.
They may not have a tragic story, but after everything they’ve been through, Kim Moo Jin and Do Hae Soo remain among the second lead couples who deserve a happy ending in Korean dramas.
