YoonA and Lee Junho KING THE LAND New Korean Drama Ignites Debate and Controversies
YoonA and Lee Junho’s new drama, King the Land, is among the outstanding projects that have garnered significant attention this month. Since this Korean drama was first announced, King the Land has shown a promising future. And that was especially after the intense chemistry between its main cast, Girls’ Generation YoonA and 2PM’s Lee Junho, after their epic couple dance to Senorita.
Expectations grew even higher after Kakao Entertainment adapted King the Land Korean drama into a webtoon. These massive investments into the project ignited more expectations from fans that it would be one of the most unforgettable Korean dramas in history.
Unfortunately, reality tells otherwise.
A few days ago, Korean media and online communities revealed that YoonA and Lee Junho’s new Korean drama King the Land has become one of their hottest topics.
But instead of hyping the drama after the release of its first episode, the discussion revolved around its lousy quality and disrespectful dialogue.
What Happened: Things that Are Problematic in the Korean Drama
So, what really happened to YoonA and Lee Junho’s new Korean drama, King the Land?
According to the reports, the were multiple problematic issues in King the Land Korean drama that highlighted its poor quality and disrespectful issues. And some of them resulted in massive disappointment from the viewers.
1. “Old” and Outdated Ambiance
First and foremost, viewers in the Korean community highlighted a primary issue following the release of King the Land’s first episode.
According to these viewers, despite having such a magnificent couple like YoonA and Lee Junho, King the Land Korean drama’s first episode was a big failure. Not only did it fail to gain the viewers’ attention, but the drama’s scenes sparked more cringes instead.
Viewers found the first episode to be a disappointing slow burn, caught in a limbo between Korean Kkondae culture and irrelevant club scenes. The drama brought Kkondae culture to the surface once again, showing the characters’ condescending human relationships and disrespectful language. And its random but meaningless club scenes only added to the outdated ambiance of the drama.
Despite being a debut project of a new writer, this star-studded Korean drama brought an old and outdated ambiance with dull quarrels between the characters.
2. Cliché and Plain Issues
Not only the drama brought an old and outdated ambiance, but the issue derived during the first episode also seemed plain and cliché.
After the release of its first episode, fans felt that the new Korean drama King the Land is simply a rehash of old themes with mediocre conflicts. The first episode brought a massive flop and destroyed fans’ high anticipation, particularly with its Cinderella-themed female lead and Rich Prince Charming male lead striving for his throne.
3. Poor Directing and Scriptwriting
Most importantly, King the Land Korean drama is deemed to have wasted so much potential not only of YoonA and Lee Junho as its main cast but also of the high-quality supporting cast.
During the first episodes, almost everyone in the cast lineup showed wonderful acting quality. They showed just enough amount of emotions, bringing the script into a believable pseudo-reality.
However, there’s just an inadequate limit on how cast members can carry the episode.
Why? Because no matter how excellent the actors are, it will be useless when the script and directing quality are lousy.
And that is what the viewers believe happened during the first episode of King the Land. All the cast’s good acting felt meaningless and unappealing.
4. Disrespectful Dialogue
Above all, the most problematic issue alleged is the disrespectful dialogue.
In its first episode, the main character Cheon Sa Rang had the task of cleaning the hotel’s gym. At the time, her senior colleague directed her to a piece of gym equipment and told her to wipe the moisture on it.
While the task itself seems ordinary, the problem lies in the language used in the description. Instead of describing it naturally as sweat, the senior colleague in the drama used the term: “sh*t dew”.
“Go and wipe the sh*t dew.
If you go there, you will find the beautiful moisture left behind by our customers.”
Cheon Sa Rang’s senior colleague in King the Land drama.
Korean netizens expressed their surprise regarding the particular dialogue. They believed that such a language was disrespectful to the people in hospitality professions and health professionals working in the gym.
But what about you? Do you think all the above issues are problematic too?
