The recent 74th Cannes Film Festival 2021 in Cannes, France, filled with a strong presence of Korean filmmakers that consist of Korean directors and actors.
Among the Korean stars who attended the 74th Cannes Film Festival 2021 there were director Han Jae-rim (Emergency Declaration), director Bong Joon-ho (Parasite), and director Yoon Dae-won (Cicada). At the same time, popular actors like Yim Si-wan, Lee Byung-hun, and Song Kang-ho also participated in the prestigious event.
In addition, the “Parasite” star Song Kang-ho also became the fifth Korean to sit on the Cannes jury member following director Shin Sang-ok (1994), director Lee Chang-dong (2009), actor Jeon Do-yon (2014), and director Park Chan-wook (2017).
At the opening ceremony of the 74th Cannes Film Festival 2021 on July 6, the South Korean director Bong Joon-ho, also known as the director of “Parasite,” gave opening remarks in Korean. Meanwhile, actor Lee Byung-hun presented an award at the closing ceremony on July 17.
Furthermore, there were three Korean films that featured during the film festival from July 6 to 17, 2021. There were “Emergency Declaration,” directed by Han Jae-Rim, “In Front of Your Face,” directed by Hong Sang Hoo, and “Cicada,” directed by Yoon Dae-won.
Cinefondation Selection at Cannes Film Festival 2021
Although no Korean films competed for the Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival 2021, a young Korean director Yoon Dae-won successfully won the second prize in the Cinefondation Selection section this year with his short film “Cicada.”
Cinéfondation is part of the Cannes Film Festival. Established in 1988, the Cinéfondation aims to support young filmmakers and search for talented new filmmakers. Moreover, the Cinefondation Selection section, launched in 1998, is part of the Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival.
This year, 1,835 applicants submitted their short films. But only 17 student filmmakers were selected to participate in the Cinefondation Selection section. The shortlisted films included 13 live-action and 4 animated shorts.
Director Yoon Dae-won “Cicada” (2021)
Yoon Dae-won is a 30-year-old student filmmaker from the Korea National University of Arts. His final project, “Cicada,” was successfully selected to compete against 16 other student films in the 24th Cinéfondation Selection at Cannes Film Festival 2021. In addition, Yoon Dae-won’s “Cicada” was selected as the opening film of Cinéfondation 2021 on July 6.
Previously, with his other short film, Bird Cage, Yoon Dae-won earned awards at the Catholic Film Festival and Korea Youth Film Festival in 2020. Moreover, he has also produced music videos for K-pop artists like BTOB and Jo Kwon.
“Cicada,” directed by Yoon Dae-won, tells about a transgender sex worker named Chang-hyun and his old friend. He works on Sowol-gil on Mount Namsan. The 17-minute-long film follows an unusual night in the leading role’s life. It analogizes the experience of a cicada leave its shell when it becomes an adult.
The 24th Cinefondation Selection winners in 2021.
The Cinefondation Selection winners in 2021 are; Theo Degen (Belgium) with “The Salamander Child,” Yoon Dae-won (South Korea) with “Cicada,” Carina-Gabriela Dasoveanu (Romania) with “Love Stories on the Move,” and Rodrigo Ribeyro (Brazil) with “Cantareira.”
