BTS Military Service Enlistment Officially Deferred: WILL Stay as 7 Members Until 2022

Good news for Kpop and ARMY fans! The millennial King of Pop, BTS, has finally deferred their mandatory military service enlistment, which means they WILL continue performing as 7 members until the end of 2022.

BTS Applies for Deferment for Military Service Enlistment

Kpop fans, we can finally breathe a sigh of relief! The Korean National Assembly has officially deferred BTS military service enlistment, which means we can still see them performing until the end of 2022!

On November 26, various Korean news media reported that BTS has officially put a deferment request for their military service enlistment. Furthermore, the millennial King of Pop requested that their mandatory military service enlistment be deferred until they reach the age of 30. This request will give BTS eldest Hyung, Jin, the chance to continue performing for another year.

BTS Military Service Enlistment Officially Deferred Until 2022

Generally, most male citizen of South Korea must enlist for military service before they reach the age of 28. Therefore, according to this law, BTS eldest Hyung, Kim Seok Jin, who turned 28 last year, is overdue for his enlistment. However, due to BTS long list of achievements, they have received an Order of Cultural Merit, which allows them to postpone their military service enlistment until the age of 30.

Still, BTS has requested the government that their military service enlistment be deferred until they REACH 30. This request is to give a chance for BTS Jin to continue performing for another year. That’s because if not, Jin would have to enlist in December 2021.

Thankfully, the South Korean government has granted this request. As a result, they have officially deferred BTS military service enlistment, which means the millennial King of Pop will continue performing as 7 members until December 2022.

Finally, the deferment decision also means that even after BTS Jin officially enlists his military service in 2022, the remaining BTS members will be able to continue performing until they turn 30.

South Korean National Assembly STILL in Discussion for BTS Military Service Exemption

Previously on November 25, media reported the National Assembly had gathered for another discussion about the Military Service Act revision. This discussion revolves around the possibility of replacing mandatory military service with volunteer works for artists who have provided and promoted impactful national prestige.

Indeed, the original Military Service Act gives military exemptions for culturally impactful athletes and artists with extraordinary skills. For example, the South Korean government had previously exempted the national soccer team at the World Cup 2002.

However, although it involves musicians and ballet dancers, this Military Service Act does NOT apply to singers.

South Korean Councils Still in Doubt for Revising Military Service Act

Up until today, the Korean government is still in doubt for extending the Military Service Act to singers and BTS

Indeed, they’ve acknowledged that BTS has reached a new level of national prestige in global and cultural impact as artists. However, the involved councils are still reluctant to make the decision. They need to consider various reasons, including the drop in South Korean human resources, especially after the declining population.

Additionally, according to the Military Manpower Administration, they need a detailed and careful review to incorporate “pop singers” into the term “art and sports personnel”. It will require a thorough consideration of objective standards and consensus from the public.
