BLACKPINK finally released the long-awaited second studio album on September 16, ‘BORN PINK.’ The eight-track album features various genres, like hip-hop, pop, disco, ballad, and rock. Listening to the whole album for the first time, we’d get thrilled as we don’t know what the quartet will bring out in each track. However, we can be sure that BLACKPINK will give us a sweet surprise, from the savage pre-release single ‘Pink Venom’ and the title track ‘Shut Down,’ to the melancholic track ‘The Happiest Girl.’
BLACKPINK Album ‘BORN PINK’ with Classy Pre-Release Single and Title Track
Pink Venom – pre-release single
YG Entertainment’s girl group BLACKPINK started their comeback with a pre-release single, ‘Pink Venom.’
Released on August 19, ‘Pink Venom’ has become one of the most earworming songs from BLACKPINK second studio album ‘BORN PINK‘. BLACKPINK has proven their domination in the music industry by topping music charts as soon as they released ‘Pink Venom.’ They also gained more fans as they got the highest unique listeners in the first 24 hours on Melon.
Moreover, within a day, the ‘Pink Venom’ music video reached 100 million views on YouTube. As per this article, the music video has surpassed 305million views.
Opened with Jisoo playing Geomungo (a Korean traditional music instrument), ‘Pink Venom’ has an elegant and expensive touch. In addition, the outfits that Jisoo, Lisa, Rosé, and Jennie wear in the music video also show how classy they are.
The hip-hop-based track also smoothly blends with EDM and pop-rap. Moreover, once we listen to ‘Pink Venom,’ the chorus echoes in our minds like a venomous yet sweet spell.
“This, that pink venom
This, that pink venom
This, that pink venom
Get ’em, get ’em, get ’em
Straight to ya dome like
Woah, woah, woah
Straight to ya dome like
Ah, ah, ah”
Shut Down – title track
The concept of ‘Shut Down’ is quite unalike from the BLACKPINK second studio album pre-release single ‘Pink Venom.’ Although both are savage tracks, ‘Pink Venom’ looks more elegant than ‘Shut Down.’ However, the title track showcases the other sides of Jisoo, Lisa, Rosé, and Jennie.
As BLACKPINK Jennie said in the song, the group is not making a comeback this time because they have never left. However, BLACKPINK expresses their confidence and duality as both Black (deadly) and Pink (sweet) in ‘Shut Down.’
Not only that, but Jennie also shows BLACKPINK domination by mentioning how they have been around the world, wearing expensive things like pearls, and investing in VVS.
The term ‘VVS’ is commonly used by rappers like Post Malone, Cardi B, Travis Scott, and more. However, we believe that BLACKPINK Jennie mentioning VVS in ‘Shut Down’ lyrics might also refer to the flawless VVS diamonds. They are one of the highest and most expensive diamond clarity grades.
“Been around the world, pearls on ya girls, VVS’s we invested uh.”
The Sweet Surprises in BLACKPINK Album ‘BORN PINK’ B-side Tracks
Typa Girl
A long-time collaborator of BLACKPINK, Bekuh Boom, took part as writer and producer for the hip-hop-rap track, ‘Typa Girl.’ The medium-beat song is a jam and gives a spotlight to each member’s vocals. Meanwhile, fans believe that Jisoo’s vocal in ‘Typa Girl’ really shines.
The brassy sound in the chorus part makes the song stimulating and addictive. Moreover, the way Jisoo, Lisa, Rosé, and Jennie detail their ‘types’ and boast about their reputation in ‘Typa Girl’ makes us nod our heads in agreement.
Yeah Yeah Yeah
BLACKPINK Jisoo and Rosé participated in the lyrics writing process of a new-wave synth-pop track ‘Yeah Yeah Yeah.’ The lyrics talk about “the baffled yet overjoyed feeling you get when you fall in love with someone you never expected to.” The disco-like melody gives us the ’80s bops with youthful energy.
“Why did you show up?
What is it that I keep remembering?
If you like me, just tell me, yeah, yeah”
Hard to Love
‘Hard to Love’ is a solo track on the ‘BORN PINK’ album by the group’s main vocalist, BLACKPINK Rosé. The retro-pop features disco-pop beats and guitar tones, along with Rosé’s angelic vocals, making it a groovy track to listen to.
Although it’s a solo track of Rosé, she is not a credited writer. Instead, Freddy Wexler, Blush, Max Wolfgang, Teddy Park, and 24 wrote this song. However, ‘Hard to Love’ is the third official released solo song of Rosé after her solo album, ‘R.’
The Happiest Girl
Teddy Sinclair, who previously worked with big stars like Madonna and Rihanna, also contributed to the track ‘The Happiest Girl’ with her husband, Willy Sinclair. Although BLACKPINK B-side track was titled ‘The Happiest Girl,’ the melody and lyrics seems to be contrast with its title. The pop song featuring a soulful chord structure and piano performance talk about the strong desire to be happy even if someone is gone.
Tally
With the pop, hip-hop, and rock track, ‘Tally,’ BLACKPINK conveys the strong-yet-positive message of how we should live our lives no matter what people say in the lyrics. ‘Tally’ embodies a confident and comforting mood.
“Everybody tells me to play nice
Everybody judge, but looking twice
But my body don’t belong to, nah-uh-uh, none of them though
And I’m not gonna change ’cause you say so.”
Ready for Love
‘Ready for Love’ was first released in collaboration with the battle royale video game ‘PUBG Mobile,‘ exclusively with an animated music video on YouTube on July 2022. The song is impactfully and meticulously arranged, which makes you want to dance along to the rhythm.
