tvN Movies held a special interview with the director of Project Wolf Hunting, Kim Song-hun, and some of its stars: Seo In-guk, Jang Dong-yoon, and Jung So-min. As a result, there are some essential things we need to know before watching the hard-boiled action film.
PROJECT WOLF HUNTING: Synopsis and Cast
12 Facts to Know Before Watching PROJECT WOLF HUNTING on tvN Movies
1. Director Kim Song-hun’s Statement
“In 1941, during World War II, humanity suffered the worst genocide in history; the Holocaust was a so-called “manhunt” conducted by imperialists. To claim victory and suppress inferior races, both Nazi Germany and the Imperial Japanese Armed Forces did human experiments to test the body’s limits. For example, what kind of germs kill humans instantly, and what would happen if you mix them into different people’s bodies? The aforementioned took place to create soldiers with physical abilities beyond humans; as a result, the Jews and prisoners of war became scapegoats fallen as victims of inhumane violence.
At the time when people achieved dramatic medical progress in exchange for the lives of innocent victims,” Project Wolf Hunting” emerged from the imagination; what if an experiment had been held to create an immortal being based on the assumption that something beyond human limits may remain as a remnant of the darkest era.”

2. Project Wolf Hunting is a twisted real story
Kim Song-hun said that he wanted to do something atypical or unheard. So when he learned the report in 2016 that 47 criminals who escaped to the Philippines were forcefully transported and ended them being moved to prisons in Korea, he thought of something unusual.
“But what if this wasn’t the end but the start? What kind of great story would develop if this was the start? That was what triggered my idea for this film.”

3. Different responses to the shocking transformations
When Seo In-guk received the script, he read it thoroughly and asked himself lots of questions. And he found that the character of Jong-doo fits him perfectly. He said the script had the exact character and genre he wanted to try.
Meanwhile, Jang Dong-yoon was really curious and directly asked questions to the director about his character in the movie. As a result, Dong-yoon was captivated by the director’s answer. And the director was impressed by how curious and dedicated Dong-yoon was.
People know Jung So-min as the “Queen of Romance-Comedies,” but little did we know she has had the urge to star in an action movie. So, there she is, transformed into detective Lee Da-yeon, holding a gun and looking very charismatic.
4. Seo In-guk’s thirst for cruelty
Not that Seo In-guk loves violence, but he’s been wanting to star in cruel scenes, just like in Project Wolf Hunting. During the interview with tvN Movies, he said, “While watching the replays, I felt a kind of gratification. Since I was young, when I watch films of different genre, and see action scenes or cruel scenes, I’ve always had the desire to portray those scenes as well.”
5. Fated in Project Wolf Hunting
As soon as In-guk read the script, he knew he was fated to be Jong-doo in Project Wolf Hunting. Not only that, but the director also thought of Seo In-guk when he wondered who could portray Jong-doo’s character. Jong-doo is pure evil and someone you do not want to associate with. The director also added a lot of charismatic elements which suited Seo In-guk more perfectly.
6. An innocent, clean-cut Jang Dong-yoon be a violent criminal
The director, Kim Hong-sun, was finalizing Project Wolf Hunting when he saw Jang Dong-yoon as a soldier in Search. At that time, he thought if someone firm, innocent, and clean-cut like Dong-yoon became a violent criminal, there’d be a lot of mystery surrounding him.
7. A10-year rookie, Jung So-min
Despite making her debut 10 years ago, Jung So-min kept humble and acted like a rookie. However, the director confessed that So-min made a lot of preparations, watched lots of films, and worked on her character well. She gave her best, and the result was beyond the director’s expectations.
8. Da-yeon’s unique character
Talking about Jung So-min’s character in Project Wolf Hunting, she admitted that Da-yeon is unique.
“She’s the kind who is strong against the strong, weak against the weak. She’s very determined, strong and is clear on what she stands for. But, in some situations, she also knows how to be warm and soft. Above all, there’s a coolness to her that comes from finishing her work professionally. That’s what I focused on for the character. She’s a very different character from all the characters I’ve played till now.”

9. Seo In-guk gained weight for the character
Thinking of being a criminal leader, Seo In-guk needed to act as one. Not only the outfit and appearance on the outside (covered in tattoos), but he also had to bulk up so that he could give off a certain aura even if he were standing still.
“So, I quickly put on weight.”

10. Jung So-min and Seo In-guk’s Relationship
The two stars, Jung So-min and Seo In-guk met in The Smile Has Left Your Eyes with a really passionate relationship. But in Project Wolf Hunting, their relationship completely changed: a detective and a criminal. Though, viewers could still see In-guk kept flirting with So-min in the film.
11. Stamina is the key
As Jung So-min stated in the interview with tvN Movies, she paid a lot of attention to her stamina. Most of the actors had a lot of action scenes that required energy and focus.
“The director wanted the action scenes to be really realistic. So, instead of something that is pre-planned, he really made it such that we were able to immerse ourselves in the situation and react accordingly.”

12. Show the white of your eyes to look crazy
Viewers couldn’t forget how “crazy” In-guk’s gaze was. When asked about the memorable “crazy” gaze, In-guk said that was just his instinct.
“For Jong-doo, I thought I should resolve everything with my eyes. So, when I did that.. To be honest, I was really worried. I was afraid it might be too uncomfortable for the viewers, and I kept asking the director about it. He said it was really good and said I really looked like a crazy person, which was great. So, when I heard that, I decided, ‘Ah, I’ll just show the whites of my eyes’.”
