YG New Girl Group BABYMONSTER Releases Debut Song “BATTER UP” with 6 Explosive Members

After all the ongoing controversy surrounding the absence of one of its key members, Ahyeon, YG new girl group BABYMONSTER eventually released their debut song, “BATTER UP”.

At midnight of November 27 KST, YG Entertainment officially debuted its new girl group, BABYMONSTER. With the new single, “BATTER UP”, 6 members of BABYMONSTER delivered impressive performances in all aspects: vocal, dancing, rapping, visuals, and mesmerizing aura of new generation idols.

Following Ahyeon’s hiatus, BABYMONSTER now consists of 6 outstanding members from various nationalities. The Korean members are Rami and Rora, the Japanese members are Ruka and Asa, and the members from Thailand are Pharita and Chiquita. Although Ahyeon’s departure had caused massive commotion, especially after the racial slur controversy, YG is still confident that the 6 members of BABYMONSTER will soon make a significant impact.

Previously, BABYMONSTER had captivated the audience during their pre-debut last evaluation with the company, YG. Just as the circulating rumors, BABYMONSTER turns out to be a new Kpop group with first-class members with explosive talents and alluring characteristics. That is why their debut has been one of this year’s most anticipated highlights, especially after YG postponed them multiple times.

Mixed Reactions Towards “BATTER UP” Debut Song

Eventually, YG unveils its new girl group, BABYMONSTER, through the debut song, “BATTER UP.” It is a hip-hop track embodying the confident and bold message typical of YG’s K-pop girl groups like 2NE1 and BLACKPINK. It features a dynamic progression with a strong bass line and tension-building siren sounds.

Instead of following the latest trend of easy-listening title tracks like FIFTY FIFTY’s “Cupid” or NewJeans’ “Super Shy”, BABYMONSTER remains solid with YG’s iconic characteristics. The company demonstrates its tenacity among the new trends, involving its proud internal producers and overseas writers, even BABYMONSTER’s own member, Asa. These talented musicians have been spending dedicated time polishing the song through numerous songwriting camps.

“BATTER UP” is a song written by Jared Lee, BABYMONSTER Asa, TREASURE’s Choi Hyun Suk, AKMU’s Lee Chanhyuk, WHERE THE NOISE, and BIGTONE. Meanwhile, the music composition is a masterpiece by Chaz Mishan, YG DEE.P, Jared Lee, and Asa.

Unfortunately, once the song releases on BABYMONSTER’s debut date, it didn’t receive as much praise as expected.

While YG’s tenacity to maintain its iconic style is praiseworthy, the company failed to improve its music quality. Multiple sources claimed that although BABYMONSTER members showed unrivaled performance, the debut song itself was overrated. The chorus was reportedly similar to BLACKPINK’s “DDU-DU DDU-DU”, but in decreasing quality and lacking powerful energy. In terms of the music style, YG has somehow failed to meet the public’s expectations.

While some people believe that it is impressive to maintain the style, others simply consider the monotonous style as YG’s failure to evolve with the trend.

Still, nobody can deny that BABYMONSTER members have shown a definitive promise for future growth in their performances, visuals, and potential.

YG Continues Iconic Revolutionary Concept with BABYMONSTER Group and Top-tier Quality Members

Nevertheless, with the debut of BABYMONSTER members and its song “BATTER UP”, YG has again successfully maintained its revolutionary concept.

Among the 4 giants in the Kpop music companies, YG has been famous for its ‘one girl group for one era’ projects. While the company has also been renowned for repeatedly mismanaging the existing girl groups, YG has proven its impressive and thorough planning for every girl group debut projects, especially with its revolutionary concepts.

YG’s 2 previous girl groups, 2NE1 and BLACKPINK, defy the mainstream by combining two contrasting ideas. 2NE1 blends the 21st century and new evolution, while BLACKPINK contrasts the cute PINK color with the strength and edginess of the color BLACK.

Today, the company has done it again by combining BABY and MONSTER, which are also contrasting images. The main idea is to combine the ironic meanings of BABY and MONSTER. It means although the members are still babies (young and rookies), they have the above-average skills of a monster. Each member possesses first-class quality vocals, rap, and dance skills, topped with jaw-dropping stage presence.

Will The Members Triumph Amid Controversy and Fierce Competition?

Finally, can BABYMONSTER members triumph amid the fierce competition of 4th generation girl groups?

Over the last couple of years, numerous impressive girl groups have made a strong presence among the 4thgeneration assembly. And that is especially with IVE captivating the domestic market and NewJeans’ unrivaled domination in both local and international Kpop communities.

On top of everything, JYP’s unexpected blunder with NMIXX also shows that having all high-quality members does not always guarantee the group’s success. That is because at the end of the day, the fate of BABYMONSTER lies in the hands of the company and fans, especially during its early debut.

So, with the ongoing controversy surrounding the company and the group, its ties to the ending era of BLACKPINK, as well as YG’s famous history of mismanaging its talents, do you think BABYMONSTER will eventually thrive in the business? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
