Whether you follow the Kpop world, religiously or casually, you would have heard of the Kpop girls groups. It’s not been easy for them with the boy bands gaining more popularity by the day and having heaps of followers from across the globe. Unfortunately, the Kpop girls groups have had a disadvantage, and fans have frequently complained about their concepts, either too female Fatale or sometimes too bubbly. There has been barely any opportunity for expansion, and we cannot dismiss how girls groups in the Kpop industry have been victims of unwarranted hate.
However, despite all the negativity, multiple girl groups in the Kpop industry continued to make a name and rule the industry. Their unabashed control, concepts, personality, and art have set them apart, and they have risen amidst the tide of hatred and won. These groups are inspirations to many and are carrying forward their genre and their talent with panache, leading the way for those who wish to hop into the Kpop world. In this article, we introduce you to 10 of those.
10 Korean girl groups who are truly inspiring and have entertaining
If you haven’t come across any, then it’s time you read through this list and know them, the girl groups who topped the charts.
1. Wonder Girls
Every time we think of retro music in the Kpop world, there’s one group that we remember, yes, you are right! The Wonder Girls, aka “South Korea’s Retro Queens.” They were always on top of the charts, and their retro-inspired music had a huge fan following. To think that they are not together anymore still breaks our hearts.
Some of Wonder Girls songs, such as Nobody and Tell Me, were some of the early viral hits from South Korea. Their song Nobody was even a part of the Billboard Hot 100. They were the first South Korean act to be a part of the Billboard Hot 100. Their last song, Why So Lonely, was released in 2016. Even though Wonder Girls members as individual artists continue to entertain us, we miss them together! Someone, turn back time, please.
2. Girls’ Generation
No discussion about the Kpop industry will ever be complete without the mention of former nonet Girls’ Generation. After seeing a stream of male idol debuts, Girls’ Generation 2007 debut made being a girl group cool again. Their vast oeuvre swings from EDM to bubblegum pop to R&B, along with their delicate balance, instantly won hearts.
With signature tracks such as Mr. Mr, Run Devil Run, Gee, and I Got A Boy proved that girl groups could be boundary-pushing and unconventional even in the Kpop industry. They have produced not only record-breaking music but also influence several acts. They made consistent appearances on Essential Kpop charts and Greatest Kpop Girl Groups.
3. 2NE1
Even though they did not stay on our screens for long, 2NE1 was the best. We mean it! They were legendary, and we cannot stop gaga-ing over their massive hits that we got to witness.
Their first song, Fire, ruled the industry and became a classic example for empowered girl groups in the Kpop industry. 2NE1 luxurious hip-hop sound, take-no-shit attitude set a benchmark for the girl-crush concept and inspired several acts. Between power anthems like I Am The Best and vulnerable tracks like Lonely 2NE1 boasted an unparalleled range in the world of Kpop. Though they separated a little too soon, while they lasted, they were definitely the best!
4. Apink
Apink is popularly known as the most consistent and steady act of the second generation Kpop world. Even though they are seniors, they have continually reinvented themselves and kept up their game. It’s not just their constant presence in the industry that makes them veterans; it’s their constant strive to do better and more.
In the beginning, they started with catchy singles and bubblegum-pop, such as NoNoNo and Mr. Chu, which instantly garnered attention and boosted their popularity but with time, they adapted and changed. They proved themselves again with their 2018 release, ‘I’m So Sick’; this brought out their darker sides and was a cultural reset for them.
They continue releasing such deeper and sometimes sexier songs such as Dumhdurum and %% (Eung Eung), and it received immense love in the Kpop industry. This one is one girl group that should never be underestimated. They have kept it real and continued to grow as they spend more time in the industry.
5. f(x)
f(x) is another girl group who rose to immense fame in the Kpop real quick but broke off too soon. They were the ones who experimented with a proclivity for LPs and electro-pop sound.
They were the rare ones who came with full-length albums into the scene. Their albums’ cohesive sonic landscape nature proved that the industry still needed ever-evolving concepts and could still deliver on more focused, longer works. There was art in their albums, and fans were always on a constant lookout for their next release. Unfortunately, after their fourth album, they decided to part ways in 2015.
6. TWICE
Twice rose to popularity with their 2017 release, TT, it plagued the industry; it won’t be wrong to say that everyone following the Kpop world heard this one. Its theme, centered around Halloween, gave all of us goosebumps, not to forget the iconic TT step and the celeb covers; it was all over the place (in a good way).
This girl group came together with the reality show Sixteen and the efforts of Park Jinyoung, CEO of JYP Entertainment. Twice, soon after, they came together, shook the Kpop industry, and ruled the charts. Their bright, happy image added to their spark. Today, they are the best-selling girl group that Kpop has ever seen. We only wish them success and loads of love.
7. BLACKPINK
One of chart-topping Kpop girls groups you should know is BLACKPINK. Who doesn’t know this four-piece group? They have broken records after records on YouTube and have been one of the most known girl groups in the Kpop world. They were even the most viewed on YouTube within 24 hours, not just once, but twice. Their release has set new Guinness records. Who can get the Lovesick Girls chorus out of their mind? There is no doubt that they will rule again.
8. Red Velvet
Informally known as the ‘Kpop’s B-Side Queens,’ Red Velvet is a demonstration of stepping on a fragile line and doing it well. Their idea and name are a combination of two perfect inverses.
The ‘Red’ side is feminine, fragile, and quirky; the ‘Velvet’ is dark, sensual, and unforgiving. Together, they make a sonic and visual blend that is a balance of appealing and tremendously chilling. It’s that in-between, a grey area, however, that makes them so dazzling.
Despite the threats hiding underneath the splendid pastels of their music recordings, sisterhood is everything. It’s this that has allowed Red Velvet to bring to life some of the most energizing Kpop music lately. From the idiosyncratic, playful tunes of Dumb Dumb and Ice cream cake to the extravagance of Peek-a-boo, we never really know what Red Velvet is up to, but we know that we certainly will appreciate it.
9. (G)I-DLE
It’s been slightly more than two years since their first release. However, (G)I-DLE has immediately become one of the most successful and popular girl groups of the Kpop industry’s fourth era. From their brazen and assorted selections of subjects to their control over their creation, (G)I-DLE shows intelligence and inspires many, despite being one of the youngest groups.
However, some of the credit goes to pioneer Soyeon, who supervises practically the entirety of the creation and songwriting for them. However, their togetherness is a genuineness reflected in their music, regardless of whether they claim their throne, discuss the tragedy, or flirting with sin. Regardless, it is safe to say that we will recall these young ladies for quite a while.
10. MAMAMOO
What do you get when you make a group from the absolute most capable singers in the business? Just a standout amongst other Kpop girl groups of our age that is what they are. Since their debut, fans wait every year for these talented young ladies to showcase their work and entertain them. It’s not simply their diverse discography, including sounds from funk to jazz to R&B, but also their attitude, take-no-shit. The members of this group have over and over got down on their haters for attempting to police their makeup and clothes, clarifying that regardless of what society tosses at them, they will consistently be ‘hip.’ We could not love them more.
If you have not watched these Kpop girls groups in the music industry, then it’s time you do and be swooned by their work. We hope to see more of them and wish them luck always.
