Have you heard? Kpop monster rookie NewJeans is facing another plagiarism accusation for the recent release, “Bubble Gum,” following the conflict between their label ADOR and parent company, HYBE. But is the issue valid? Because some of the Korean fans found proof that this accusation is simply the iconic media play from HYBE. So, what really happened to NewJeans? Was “Bubble Gum” really a result of plagiarism? Join us in the discussion below.
NewJeans Faces Plagiarism Accusation for “Bubble Gum”– What Happened?
Amid the complicated conflict and drama between HYBE and ADOR CEO Min Heejin, a new plagiarism accusation emerged against NewJeans.
On May 12, a post emerged on the Korean online community TheQoo, discussing a strange news article from a Korean media outlet, Sports Chosun. This post reportedly emerged on the same date around 1 PM, KST.
Furthermore, the title of the post questioned NewJeans and ADOR CEO Min Heejin on whether they had merely sampled a song or blatantly plagiarized it.
It also highlighted the irony that ADOR CEO Min Heejin, who had previously raised plagiarism issues with ILLIT, appeared to have committed the same offense herself. It then featured some netizens’ comments, criticizing ADOR CEO Min Heejin for being a hypocrite.
Along with the article, a video also emerged, highlighting the similarities between NewJeans “Bubble Gum” releases and the 1980s track “Easier Said Than Done” by an active British jazz-funk band, Shakatak.
A Complete Rebuttal Against the Accusation: Was It A Media Play from HYBE?
Immediately after the accusation went viral on the internet and the Korean online community, another YouTube video emerged as a complete rebuttal.
According to the video, Shakatak has been making their songs available for sampling. In fact, Shakatak’s “Easier Said than Done” has been sampled by more than 13 songs without credits. The video also noted the fact that some cleared sampled songs do not necessarily require the artist to credit the original tracks, depending on the agreement.
The Article is Now Deleted
After this rebuttal video, Sports Chosun suddenly deleted the article from the website. That is why some Korean netizens believe that it was a complete media play from HYBE.
After all, the reporter Lee Yoo Na, who initially wrote the article, showcased a history of negatively criticizing Min Heejin amid the HYBE vs ADOR conflict. Therefore, the majority of the public in South Korea is becoming even more hostile towards HYBE. Online communities like TheQoo and Instiz featured thousands of posts and comments saying HYBE is ruining Kpop.
- “I’m really not happy with HYBE.”
- “It’s surprising how much HYBE is overreacting about a song that used a sample, isn’t it?”
- “I’m all in for NewJeans and Min Hee Jin! The more challenges they face, the more support they get from us!”
- “Getting really fed up with how HYBE seems to play games with the media. It’s pushing me away from supporting them… It feels like they’re trying to interfere with NewJeans’ comeback.”
- “Might be good to keep track of which outlets are putting out negative stuff about Min Hee Jin and NewJeans. It seems like HYBE is worse than we thought… We’ve got to be cautious about what we believe in the media now. I’m hoping NewJeans can overcome this.”
- “Keep going, NewJeans and Min Hee Jin! Let’s see the underdog come out on top!”
- “I’m not a fan of HYBE at all… Sending lots of good vibes to Min Hee Jin and NewJeans.”
- “Looks like HYBE noticed all the chatter about someone else copying NewJeans’ unique style, and now suddenly there’s all this talk of plagiarism. But we see what’s happening, right?”
- “HYBE is really not handling this well, are they?”
